So I brought my car to my brother in laws shop this weekend, we jacked it up on the lift so we could look underneath and everything, make sure everything is okay. We were pleased to see that the car is pretty much rust free underneath! but we noticed something.. I think it's the intercooler line from the radiator, the aluminum portion of it is getting rubbed by a bolt on the steering rack (i think?). we also noticed that the arm for the steering rack or whatever is set at an angle. the car is an 86.5, but the engine is from an 89 turbo. we took all the hosing off from the turbo so we could get at the intercooler hose, took it off, cut the rubber a little shorter to try and get it to sit higher, it worked for the most part, but the bolt is still catching when the wheels turn and it really concerns us because it's cutting away at the aluminum. i have pictures i'll post at the bottom of this post. just wondering if anyone here could give some pointers of how we can fix this!

here are the pictures:

i think you can click them to make them bigger. the preview is showing they are small pictures.

1st off did I read your post correctly, did you say you trimmed the intercooler hose shorter. (Im also assuming these are the toyota hoses by the look) If that is the case you should never have had to because they are ment to fit a certain way. What it sounds like is something is pushed.. but its hard to tell from the pictures. Take some from the front facing the back get other things in the picture to see what is going on around it. Also take them normaly, its hard to get a clear idea with the pictures at 90 deg. Also how is the steering rack on angle is it bolted down correctly or is the whole subframe shifted?

If worse comes to worse, that bolt that's hitting the intercooler is holding the steering shimmy damper on.
You CAN take that entire shimmy damper off, with very little noticeable effect. But that's a worst case scenario.

I'm not exactly sure. I had other pictures but they were too big to upload I guess. My guess is they are probably factory hoses. The guy I bought the car from did the engine swap, I haven't done any replacements of any sort yet besides both the front lower ball joints. One was bad, the other was 10 times worse... About to fall out, in fact.
It does look like there is a place it's supposed to bolt onto the bottom somehow, but it isn't. The hole that it looks like it should be bolted too is at a different angle. So for now we did a quick silt tie job to it and pushed it up as far as we could. Until we can figure out a decent solution we are gonna put some electrical tape on the bolt just to minimize wear.

That looks like the steering damper bolt/nut that's rubbing. Make sure your IC brackets are bolted to the IC and are fitted properly. You IC should not be that far aft.
