hey ya'll

my mums computer has been suffering from alot of blue screens and i just didn't know what was causing them
common errors are: irq not less or equal
minidumps show ntfs.sys, ftdisk.sys, partmgr.sys as suspects

to be honest i don't know really what that means
in googling and finding more about irqs i have added info at the bottom of this msg showing irq sharing/conflicts & address with various drivers

i see that the capture card and video card are on the same irq and usb host controller and networking adapter, are these causing the blue screens and how would you suggest i fix it?

THANK YOU!!!! for helping :)

You could try uninstalling the video card and/or capture card and then reinstalling them with the latest drivers. Sharing IRQs isn't always a bad thing, I don't think. I don't know enough about it. A quick look at my computer shows that IRQ 22 has two things on it as does 23 and I haven't had any problems.

If the capture card is not installed do you not get blue screens of death?

not too sure as i've never disabled any of it
and i'm not allowed to touch any hardware as i have alot of static energy lol
killed a few motherboards in my time ;)

some reading i've done is that i should move the capture card to a different slot away from the cpu

i think these have only started since installing the new hardware
capture card
internal hdd
video card
memory

not sure at which new installed hardware this began
i ran memcheck and it went though the basics and passed

unfortunately there are no new drivers for the capture card and i've tried changing drivers for the video card but no difference

i have noticed that capturing is becoming a problem and am needing to install a diff program to capture at least once a month
i.e windows movie maker won't capture at a higher resolution, sometimes can get away with 320px capture but comes up with unknown errors
other programs i just get random problems usually unspecified
about the only thing that still works is windvd creator & the original software play tv pro by prolink

The hard drive and memory should be fine. I would suspect the capture card and video card. I forgot about trying to change slots, that's a good idea too. You can ground yourself before working with the computer parts. There is one part of my computer I know I can touch to release static electricity.

Alright...I had just typed all this out and somehow I logged off SM and it all got deleted...so here's try number 2
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IRQ's are just interrupts. You have a background program *loop that checks for stuff* that waits for these interrupts to happen. The hardware and software both throw these, but all of the ones you listed seem to be harddware. When the interrupt is detected, the program counter jumps to a specific place in memory and starts to execute a block of code...if two different devices share the same interrupt then the computer doesn't know where to go and you end up with the blue screen.

Here's a couple of things you can try...

1) Update your chipset drivers, your graphics card driver and your modem driver. Something might have gotten messed up when the expansion boards were added and an update might fix it. If that doens't work...

2) If you have a spare graphics card laying around...remove the Radeon 9250 and replace it with the spare. See if that fixes anything. Also, you could go to your BIOS and try to turn off either the USB controller or the Networking adapter and see if that fixes anything. I would suggest trying to turn off the networking adpater. If it does fix something, then you might just need to pick up a new PCI networking adapter.

Try updating the drivers first...much like the Supra, try to go the cheapest route first, heh. Post back with new info...I'd like to try and help.

Haha ok, here's program that'll tell you all your hardware specs.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Download is in the top left corner, you'll need to make a new folder and then extract the 4 files to the folder using winzip or something like it. Then just click the "cpuz" icon in the folder and everything will come up. Then just search yahoo or something for the manufacturer's website for the mainboard you have, and then there should be a "driver" or "support" section of that site that will have driver updates.

Or if you're brave enough, hardware killer heh, just open up the case and look around the mainboard, it should be printed somewhere.

Here's a link to ATi's official driver for the Radeon cards
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Hope this helps some.

The chipset is on your motherboard. The motherboard should come with a disc with drivers for it, unless it's a store-bought computer, in which case they'd be on the restore disc or something like that.

[edit] It's usually better to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers from there though [/edit]

Did the computer act normal a week ago, and then without any change, start acting up, or was new hardware or software installed or tinkered with in/on the computer?

ntfs.sys, ftdisk.sys, partmgr.sys

That's pointing out three things to me:
File System
Disk
Partition

May be time for a format/re-install.
