it seems like most supras have a hard time keeping cool. and im having some problems with that too. i put another radiator on changed pumps flushed the system and even changed the entire head once and the thermastat. but it still over heats after about 15 min on the interstate. but it does good at slower speeds, and it accumulates an extreme amount of pressure once i let the pressure go and refill the radiator it will go for about 15 min again. i was thinking of getting a bigger radiator but that will only mask the problem. any suggestions.

Sounds to me as if you might have a leak possibly.. Have you changed all the hoses? Are you using distilled water and the correct antifreeze?

^^ tru dat, but i havent had that problem and mine flew off on the freeway over a year ago, if the hoses are replaced and everything maybe the coolant sensor is bad?

Is your undercover intact? MKIIIs have a hard time keeping cool when the undercover is damaged or missing.

bullshit, GTFO.

and in all honesty, pull your thermostat, go drive around after you re-burp the system, and see if it still overheats, sounds like your thermostat isnt opening and your pressure is building up and then pouring your coolant the overflow and thus you over heat.

no undercover, and NO shroud and my car stays at temps in traffic just fine with a 195 t-stat.... and thats even boosting in the streets. what this guy needs is to redo the system and make sure all of the hoses are good and so are the seals.

you have a blockage somewhere if its only at hight speed, or your not holding the pressure. check the cap, and make sure you flush the block out with some of the prestone fulsh kit stuff.

and if your losing pressure somewhere, you'll over heat.

Rennat: You're wrong on this, Your car may be "special" but in general a missing undertray is good for a 5>10c temp rise at highway speeds and depending on the condition of the cooling system this can be enough to tip it over the edge.

He say's it's holding pressure so it's unlikely to have a leak now is it?

my 86.5 didnt have the shroud, undercover, and the coolant lines were routed WRONG. and it still did fine...

theres more to the story then whats hes saying... he may have a cracked block from all of the over heating for all we know.

and IJ, this is what throws me off

"and it accumulates an extreme amount of pressure once i let the pressure go and refill the radiator it will go for about 15 min again"

pressure doesnt always mean theres coolant there, steam is also pressure, so he could be blowing it out of the res. which is why when he gets going fast, it blocks up, goes out the cap into the res, all pours out, and then over heats, releives the pressure, and refills and is all good. my friends car had the same problem, and it was his thermostat....
and when i pulled my buddys cap i expected a giant shower of hot coolant, but NOTHING but hot steam came out...

IJ, then why would he pull the cap and REFILL the radiator? if the coolant is just overheating then it would just overheat, but hes saying he refills the radiator, which to me, means a loss of coolant. so hes either burning it, or somethin...

hahahaha... that would really blow!

we need the opener to report back obvisouly...

i thought about the air thing, but eh... shouldnt over heat that bad. mine just had little temp spikes when it had air in it.

sorry i dont get much time off it doesn't lose water i can drive at regular speeds for a hour and it be fine and be full of water but above 2400 rpms it starts to build pressure then it gets hot then when i shut it off it will pour the water on the ground after it fills the over flow tank it has a new thermastat and iv flushed the system about 4 times in the last month and water runs through the radiator and block with no restrictions. all i can think is maybe its leaking around the head gasket a t high rpms and pressurezing the system. but im not sure how that would make it over heat.

Because exhaust gases are freakin hot?

I had similar symptoms and sadly, it sounds like a BHG.

it could be your rad cap not holding the pressure at high speeds.

but dont confuse high pressure with high heat, because when the system is really hot and you take the cap of, there is pressure, but its from the heat of everything.

in all honesty, sounds like your engine is fucked... but i did the same thing on the smog dyno, and i just replaced my thermostat and my rad cap and i passed just fine... lol

i had a similar problem,
1; my thermostat was rusted shut due to mixing 50/50 coolant and water

2; solution---, i bought a 160 degree thermostat with new seal, this thermostae opens early and keeps the open till the temp is leveled or lower
3; i emptyed out and flushed the radiator, jacked up the car in the back and purged the block, i completely washed out all the shit that was in there and when i was done i want and got some prestein all antifascist and fulled her up and from then on there she never did again, and if that dosent work and u dont have any leak, well then it might be ur head, and if it is, i wld pull that motor out and swap for a jdm 1.....

I think that thermostat is too cold. You're probably running rich.
