Alright, I am currently in the process of trying to get a supra. I am currently driving a 94 Integra LS. The problem is that when I purchased my integra, I was only 17, and thus had to have my mother co-sign for it. Now that I want to sell it to get a supra, she will not let me. Her argument is that I will have more problems with the supra because it is even older than my current car. Although she may be correct, I think that may not be true if I fond a well taken care of Supra, but I am not sure. So I guess I am asking for your opinions on the matter. I am 18 and in college, and have enough time to work on it if need be, but would prefer not to be working on it all of the time. So what do you think. Is my mother correct in that I should wait until I am out of college, or would I be okay to get it now?

sorry for the long post, and I appreciate your time.

UPDATE
I appreciate all of your input, and have made a decision. I am either 1: going to keep the integra and go for a cheaper MKIII to fix up, or 2: sell the teg, find a cheaper interga with a good motor but crappy paint or something else unimportant that would bring its value down, and buy a decent MKIII to fix up. I will update again once I get the supra.
Thanks again and I'll see ya around.

Well, you WILL find yourself in times of struggle and stressing over getting this or getting that. Yes, finding a Supra in great shape is going to help a lot...but if it's been untouched ( stock HG) or anything like that, the day WILL come.

80% of people I know that are in School and own a Supra....are usually in a bind with a Supra all torn apart trying to fix something, but find that they never have time to fix it.

Well, if you've got some sort of funds for it, and the time, go for it!!!

I won't say that it will go crashing and burning and blow up....but things don't always go as planned...

Good luck to ya, and joining the forums is a GREAT start. Search for things you don't know, if you can't find it, ask us, we'll try our best to help you out. :)

Yeah, gotta tell you they do present their problems.

Mine is my daily driver, im 16, senior in high school. Problem is, I've been driving an 87 Mitsubishi pickup for the past 4 weeks, cuz my 'perfect condition' 91 Supra is in the shop getting a Blown Head Gasket (one of the most common probs) repaired. My uncle was the previous (2nd) owner bought the car in 'perfect condition' I think in 96, paid 10 grand for it, and quickly dropped $12,000 just getting it to run after it had some problems pop up. He did tons of research on it, had tons of work done and brought it back to like new spec. But that didn't last too long....
I've already had to replace the fan clutch (no big deal), and then this, which is a $2,000 fix.

That said, yeah, the Teggie will be a lot more reliable car, and for a busy college student prolly the better, cheaper, more rational option.
But, these can be a ton of fun, and are a lot less common than Integra's.
Plus, they have lots of nice little features and are prolly a lot more comfy than the Acura.

Either way, have fun, and welcome to the Mania.

EDIT: BTW, on the 'convincing your parents' note, do lots of research here first, if you decide you absolutely want one, you can probably pick one up and pocket a small amount of cash from the sale, if your Teg's in good condition and not too high of mileage, so there's a point to make. From there, look to find one thats been well kept, all the maintenance records, stuff like that. Expect at least $3500. If you have the cash, there are some good clean cars for sale on here as well, but most of them have been at least moderately restored/modded, so they'll run you a bit more money.
Also, these tanks are most likely a lot safer than the Teg, esp if you can fin a 91 or 92 w/ airbags.

Not to be the devils advocate, but your mom is a wise one. Its a great fun car if you have the time to keep it great. Its not the wisest choice for daily driver, trust me. It takes alot to keep a car this old going especially since its powerful thus putting more stress on all components rather than a car with a small not so powerful car like an acura/honda. :icon_bigg

Edit: like the above says, if you have a supra, might as well save yourself the time later and get a daily driver.. not only will it get you around if the car is being moody, but usually your chosen daily driver gets better gas mileage

^ beater and supra is needed. Unless you can find a clean ass supra with no problems.. which is really rare. Let me just say I dd my supra with no major problems, the main reason my supra holds up is that it was owned by my uncle which took car of the car. The best thing I can say is.. Only get a Supra if you really want it. If you have to think twice pass on it.

I can probably get about 5k out of the teg, so I can most likely find a beater as a daily, then have the supra, however, then insurance cost becomes a problem. Maybe I'll just buy a fix er up or a shell and start with that. I definately want a supra though, always have, but couldn't afford it at the time so I got the teg. I've spent the last year fixing up the teg, so now with its value increased if I sell it I should have enough for the supra.

I'm also part of this 80%. Mine's usually only down because I'm upgrading(until I blew my clutch last week)

You can keep a Supra a very reliable daily driver and fun sports car. But if you don't take care of regular maintenance, you plan on modding it, or forget to remember you drive a 15+ year old car, plan on having a backup plan. Without my Daily Driver, I'd be screwed.

We all seem to be saying what you dont want to here!!!! I know many here daily drive their cars and thats great!!! I personally belive if you own one you need a daily driver as well. Why dont you keep your teg and find a cheaper not so great supra and build it as your own. Wy wife and I could not afford for me to go buy the Supra I wanted so I found a $600 pile and made it into what it is now. Good luck!!!

Yeah, if you can get 5k out of the Teg I'd say it might not be such a bad idea.
You could look for decently maintained (not necessarily perfect) Supras in the 2500-3500 range, and buy a real cheap old Corolla or Civic or something, and stash it as a back up for when (yes, sorry, thats a 'when', not an 'if') things go wrong.
Then just DD the Supra and suffer the beater when she's broken.

I know there are some people who buy beaters so they can save the Supra and drive the beater on a daily basis, but that just seems backward to me.
After a month of that pathetic truck, I think I'll be kissing my baby when I get her back :p
Maybe I'll even make the girlfriend jealous lol. I'm wondering when shes gonna get fed up w/ me talking about it!
