I decided to ditch R154 and looking for advice from knowledgeable people. Never drove in my life car with auto transmission, just recently started paying attention to GM auto application on street/strip cars
Car is mk3, 7M motor, 3.24 ltr stroker from Suprarich, 78mm BB turbo. Motor will be built with best parts, want to rev it to 7500 rpm. Now my friend will be making exhaust manifold for me with very long ~90-95 cm (nearly 3 feet) runners. So, I hope to have good bottom end torque from this motor. Wanted to use SP quick-spool valve, it is very neat idea, but not sure how well it stands to anti-lag. Otherwise this valve would give even more bottom end torque
Car will weigh ~3050-3100 lb with driver, 3200 lb street weight, 3.91 rear end, have 3.73 as spare in my garage.
I don’t want TH400 – too heavy and inefficient. Though for sure TH400 is cheapest way, in nearly stock form they hold a lot of power. Seems like I am left with TH350 or Powerglide. I would prefer 3-speed TH350 but not sure how much power it will take, have yet to hear about one running behind 1000hp motor. I understand TH350 have some inherent weakness, something like lack of intermediate support plate for shaft bearings. This makes them unsuitable for 600-700+ lb-ft torque. At least this is what I read many times. I would be happy if someone can prove this wrong (Duane ?? ) All info I gathered is from the Net, probably it is not correct
Last choice I have is Powerglide, I think it will be the way I go, just need opinions from folks who know this subject. I have many questions, would be grateful to hear your comments. I want to order tranny from ATI, lot of info I gathered is from their site. They can be built for 1500+ hp and have many bells and whistles to make them nearly bulletproof. I also like the fact of lower parasitic loss of Powerglide.
1. High hp Glide comes with 1.80 gear, how will it feel off the line on the street with 3.91 rear, 26” street tires? I realize that torque converter will make or kill my combo, will order it when I know motor torque and power curves. I understand for street/strip car I need tight 3300-3500 rpm true stall converter and use nitrous/2-step to spool turbo on the strip
2. Another option is to buy 3.55 gear set from Jawsgear and swap it only for ¼ mile. Powerful cars only benefit from lower gear and run faster 1/4 mile, but on the street most likely it will feel miserably slow off the line
3. How easy to do basic rebuild of Powerglide? I am in Ukraine and sending heavy transmission to US for rebuild is expensive option. I have to buy book from TCI or other on this subject
4. If Glide comes with deep aftermarket pan how low it will be hanging? Is it OK to use on street car? Or better to use shallower stock pan and something like B&M fluid consistency system which adds 4 qtrs of fluid capacity.
5. Will it be sufficient to run one transmission cooler w/ integral fan, size 15" x 7.5" x 3" or most likely I need two of them? I understand tighter and more efficient converters create much less heat then loose ones.
6. Anybody has firsthand experience with Gear Vendors overdrive unit? Or at least had a ride in the car equipped with it. It comes with electronic control unit for automatic engagement/disengagement of overdrive. What is the principle of work of this ECU, does it need rpm signal and something like strain gauge on the shifter? How it works with manual Glide when let’s say accelerating 1st – 1st over – 2nd ?
7. How noisy straight cut gears in Powerglide? I have read somewhere that properly cut these gears don’t have to be very noisy.

Thanks

Lets see if i can help a bit.

1. You will be making too much power for a 3.91. I had 3.91's and with the th350 and 26" tires, I was hitting the limiter (~7k) at about 1000'. I was only trapping 125mph, and you have potential for much more mph. Converter slippage factors into this of course, so its hard. Just to give you an example, for a 150mph trap speed with a 26" tire @7500 rpm it equals out to a 3.87ish ger assuming no slippage. Assuming a conservative 5% converter slippage, it puts you at a 3.69ish gear. If youre dead set on a 26" tire i'd go with the 3.55's. If you go to a 28" tire you could use the 3.91s, btu i'd probably prefer the 3.73s out of the 89+. This, as i said is assuming a 150 trap speed, so you can adjust the #s from there. It seems as if you may make enough power to do 150, so thats why I used it. I also dont thing the PG is your best option. I think a th350/400 would better suit you, especially with the street driving.
2. deep aftermarket pans are great for the street. Extra capacity and fins help keep the fluid cooler, and be sure to get the best tranny cooler available, or even run 2 of them, depending on the airflow they recieve.
3. Ive been in a car with a strait cut glide and a gear vendoes unit, and it worked well. It was fairly noisy, but not unbearable. If i remember right, there was only a button involved in the overdrive unit engaging. IE, drive in 1st, hit button-activates 1st over, shift to 2nd-deactivates, hit button-2nd over, etc. At least thats how I remember it from 4 years ago...

I'm sure I missed a few things...hope I helped a bit.

I run the ATI TH350 which I bought new through Suprarich and got me a great deal. It is a good street and strip transmission. It is built for 1300hp as it is the same trans that Paul Affontis ran in his 7sec Supra. Rich could touch base on that if the name is incorrect. (spelling unknown) For cruising is great and punching it, it's more controllable. Just put a good cooler on it and you're good to go!

Brian, I did the math and at 150 in my car, the rpm would be around 7600 with a 3.73 gear. I don't have the math table in front of me but iirc, that is what it was.

Guys, thanks for replies.
Bryan, I will start from 3.91, later go down to 3.73. Then there is 3.55 from Jawsgear. I imagine to fit 28" tire will be major PITA, I had to roll fenders for 26"
Duane, Rich told me about 1000+ hp TH350, I just never saw any info confirming this. Do you have stock transmission case/bellhousing? AFAIK ATI don't produce anything of this kind. Remember JW make superbell for TH350

I have the ATI casing and you need to massage the undercarriage some. I called ATI about the capabilities for hp, they confirmed it for me. :)

I seem to recall 3.42 available sometimes from Jaws, it or a GV unit would be useful for me at highway speeds.
Mine is just a mild build 350 and it has taken everything I can give it

Are you guys using the ATI adaptor kit to bolt the GM trans to the 7M?? what converter? What else do I need to swap a GM auto into the car? I can get a TH350 cheap and get it built pretty cheap as well, so what would I be looking at $$$ wise for the rest of the swap?? I have a built Toyota in it right now and Im already overpowering it, so I am lookin at the TH350 swap. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys.

^^ Using the ATI adapter/kit which comes with every bolt you need for the swap. You will also need a custom trans mount made, DS, shifter, speedo, hmmmm I think that's it, off to the top of head. Also needed if you head to track is a neutral safety hook up.

Cool, thanks for the info.

What converter are you guys running?

mine was a custom from the converter wholesaler in town, a Toy front plate, Chrysler spacer and GM back. It was setup to stall at 3500 but actually stalls at 2700 :(

I've never seen a track in Odessa either but I could be wrong ;)

The wife and daughter are heading home in July for 6 weeks. Unfortunately I can't make it this year otherwise I'd have liked to meet you and see the car. Next year looks good though. Hopefully you won't be at sea...
