Hi guys, im new to the supra world and i just bought an 87 MK3 turbo 5spd from a guy who used to be my mechanic (he left and closed down the shop). I bought it from him for 800 bucks (car used to be 1000 but he gave me a discount), it was last registered in 2006 and has a full turbo back so i finally got it towed home a couple of weeks ago....

So my first problem and the original main problem, the guy told me the car had was that it had no spark. So instead of paying him 70 bucks to do a diagnostic i wanted to try and figure it out myself. First i found out the battery was dead, so i replaced that it gave me power to the inside and allowed me to crank the car but it wouldn't turn over. Then on a hunch i checked the fuse box and found out the main relay was missing, got one on craigslist for dirt cheap, put new gas in the car, added the main realay and cranked it. The car turned over but then died shortly after due to lack of an intercooler. Which leads me to yesterday i searched about 6 junkyards till i found one, (get this one junkyard wanted to charge me 150$$ for one) for a good price took it home and installed it last night. Now the engine cranks and after a few tries turns over (clogged injectors??) and tries to die but i can hold it on by revving it. Me and my friend took it down the street and quite a few things happened last night.

1. First thing i noticed was the speedometer wasnt working and while trying to give it a lil boost boost gauge was only reading 1 or 2 psi tried to floor it and the car was being a slug (took me forever just to get out of first)

2.The ride was bumpy which is understandable because i have two flats on it, but it kinda jerked a lot and stalled with the battery light and the check engine light coming on a few times, but car started every time after.

3. car started smoking opened the hood to find i had a bad oil leak smoke was comming out of the oil dip stick and around the turbo i traced the leak to the oil pan so my friend told me he figured i needed a new gasket for the oil pan. (don't know if oil is coming out of the intake or intercooler piping yet haven't checked it was dark when all of this was going on)

So if i could i would like to ask the experts on here what their opinion is on the matter, i was thinking of changing the spark plugs, oil, and fixing the gasket to see if i could get it to stop leaking. The oil got low last night so i dont know if i have enough to check for a BHG, but i dunno if the engine has low compression a blown turbo or a BHG. Oh and it makes a loud growl almost mustang or camaro-ish is it supposed to sound like that? Or is that just the turbo back? I remember one of my friends warped his head on his dsm and it sounded like a lawnmower so i dunno. I know sound can tell you alot when it comes to a car but i need some advice from the guys who know what they are doing when it comes to supras.

You drove it down the road with two flats and low oil?

Start by doing proper maintenance. Change the plugs, and the oil, fix leaks. You may want to drop the gas tank to drain the crap out of it and replace the fuel filter while the tank is off. It can't hurt to get the garbage out of it that will come out. I'd definately do a compression test on all the cylinders. I'd drain the radiator and fill with new fluid. There's a lot of things you can do. I'd also check for codes to see what it's telling you is wrong. You've got a lot ahead of you, but you can only do them one at a time so get to it.

Well the smart thing to do is....check compression, check codes, check oil, fix oil leaks, new wires and plugs, and use the fucking search function!!

Use some sense Damnit...fix what needs fixing like WTF can we possibly tell you to do with the very little info you gave us??? Fix the things you know need fixing then ask questions.

(heh didnt think i would get flammed so fast lol)well ive been trying to use the search function but it just gives me random threads when i type in things related to what im looking for. Like the other day when i searched main relay i wanted to find out what it controlled but i had no luck so i just replaced it....

i dont have a diagnostic machine so i cant read codes, and i got new tires the car had full oil before i tested the car last night and im just trying to see if i can get it to run enough to go to the mechanic because always paying for towing is a bummer, but thanks for the advice anyway. Ill fix what problems i found and see if anymore show up.Sorry i couldnt give more info i dont know much about this car but i guess one cant learn unless he does it himself.

Nobody really flamed you. GV maybe was a little irritated, but you've got to admit some of the questions you asked are pretty much self explanatory, and we get new people in here everyday asking the same question. Everything you need to know has already been asked, answered and discussed a thousand or more times. Search is kinda random, but if you look, you'll find answers. If you have any more problems, feel free to shoot me a pm and I'll do my best to help you as long as you've tried to help yourself first. Good luck, Jay

We here are on top of the game...flameing has no time limit ;)

Tools needed to check codes:
1. Paperclip
2. Tsrm

...................
and no I wasn't flameing you....you just asked questions that are stupid and selfexplanitory.

The sluggishness and bucking could be coming from a Boost leak. Check that all of your intercooler pipes are secure and crack free. Remove the one on the bottom of the turbo, and squeeze it looking for small cracks to appear. That hose gets the most heat, and thus fails the most. Sometimes you can't see them while they are still on the turbo. Also check the small coupler between the 3000 pipe and the throttle body.

Advise........Don't start upgrading the car until you get it running perfectly! There may be a reason that the mechanic didn't have it running. One, he may just be stupid, OR the problem requires a tear down. Many mechanics don't want to screw with their own motor rebuild after they have been working on everybody elses all day.

You're NOT on the top of shit and if you continue to post in an offensive manner you'll be having some time off to think about it.

One and only warning.

MkIIISD: I apologise for this shit it's NOT the way we do things here a few of our more mouthy members seem to forget they had NFI not all that long ago.

Have noticed this in a bunch of threads....

Be a good idea to check the baggage at the door Goon.

I've lost track to be honest....sorry

Yeah guess that would be a good idea...I'm not a fan of the timeouts LOL

It's mostly been said, but I'll break it down and I'll tell a few more things.

- Check codes (post em on here so we can help)
- Clean where the oil is supposedly leaking, and then run the engine to find out where it's REALLY leaking. I seriously doubt it's the oil pan gasket. As stupid as this sounds, I've seen it before...but your oil filter might just be loose.

- Change ALL fluids. Brake fluid absorbs water, most oils turn to sludge, gas turns to varnish, coolant looses it's protection against corrosion.

- Do a general checkup. Check compression. Check timing. Look for issues all over the car.

- Post pictures, as your oil leak could be related to other stupid things I've seen done. Just good pictures of the engine bay will help a lot...

what is your idle like? i assume you still have the afm. check in the tsrm to see if its working properly and that its plugged in. if you have access to one, check your vacuum with a vacuum gauge and determine if you have any boost leaks.
do all this in addition to what the others recommend

how much oil? is it just lined with oil or is there a pool of oil? a little bit of oil is not uncommon. go ahead and check your codes, it is real quick and if you have none, it will eliminate alot of possible problems. if you do find you have some, post them up here and we can help you with them
