I found some interesting information today. I was researching what the differences were between the pre89 yellow plug 7mge and the gray plug 89+ 7mge. I always new the power was the same, but this came up while browsing through original Supra brochures:
86.5 and 87:
200hp @ 6000rpm
185 ft lb @ 4800 rpm
88+
200hp @ 6000rpm
188 ft lb @ 3600rpm
Peak torque much earlier in the later models, very interesting. As far as I can recall, the 88 7mge is still yellow plug. I have a full 89+ setup laying around, it might be fun to change it over while I am removing the intake manifold for cleanup.
i thought this was because 89+ motors use a different crank
