Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums. To kinda get everyone up to par here, I have a 1988 Supra Turbo.

How its modified:
I purchased it with a lot of performance mods already. All I know is that the turbo is 'upgraded', there is a large amount of receipts showing lots of mods including a new engine, then lots of new internals, some suspension upgrades, new exhaust, etc. It also has a dyno sheet showing it push 404hp. I know it's pushing about 15psi... well it used to.

What its doing:
Now, when I start it up, and sometimes when taking off, there's a large puff of white smoke coming out the exhaust pipe. My oil pressure is near 40psi when its cool, but stays near and sometimes under the mark that I assume is 20psi when it is warmed up. Driving it on the highway (i.e. higher RPMs) does make the oil pressure increase a little.

What I think is wrong is that the turbo has gone bad. I was just gonna see what other people here think, and get some ideas as to what to do next.

I'm kinda low on cash at the moment, but do expect to allocate about $500-600 to this project, and certainly want some quality equipment.

I saw this on ebay. I'm thinking about getting it and since I'm new to the whole turbo thing, I was curious as to whether or not it would require a lot of modification, and about what I should expect to get it installed.

personally i would buy a boss series, stock fitment and the turbos are going to last wayy longer than that turbo from ebay is

and stock fitment = less money towards a new downpipe heh

^Hush. He took his time to compose a well written first post, he can at least get a good, thought out response from us.

Check your turbo, does it say Toyota Ct-26 on the silver part of it? If it does, then that means it is a stock based turbo. If so, and you've got white smoke, it is more possibly blueish in color, or burning oil. Check your oil level closely when cold to see if it has gone down. By the way, it is a good, safe practice with the 7M engine to run it one extra quart above the full mark, it will not hurt a thing ;).

Have you lost power since it's been smoking? Decrease in boost pressure? You can pull off the hose connecting the AFM and air filter to the turbo, put your hand in there, and wiggle the turbine to see if it has any shaft play (up and down, sided to side, and any in and out movement at all). If it does, it could very well mean that your turbo is going bad. BTW, don't do this while the motor is running unless you don't value your fingers ;).

If your turbo is indeed a CT-26, then you can ship it off to either MDC motorsports, or driftmotion to have the turbo upgraded for around $700 ish including shipping, assuming the turbo is rebuildable. If the turbo has already been upgraded like you are thinking, then hopefull it was a smaller upgrade. The 57 trim upgrade for the CT-26 is one of the most popular/longer lasting upgrades for the turbo and the two companies I mentioned above are some of the best in the business when it comes to upgrading supra turbos ;).

Bot MDC and Driftmotion are active members here on the forums, check them out in the vendor's section. MDC is easier to reach by contacting boost lee instead of MDC himself as he's a very busy man. Bigaaron is the co-owner of driftmotion and is highly active on here and I recomend him also as I've personally done business with hime before and his services are top notch ;).

Hope this helps!

Another thing, STAY AWAY FROM EBAY TURBOS!! THEY ARE PIECES OF SHIT FILLED WITH WALNUT SHELLS! I am not joking, ask MDC, he's seen it first hand when tearing one down for a rebuild.

Welcome to the forums.. If your happy with the power. Then I would just rebuild it or use it as a core.

It's a ct26 housing. I also have an extra turbo that came with the car. Wastegate is stuck closed though. It's also a CT26

Yeah, Used to stay very steady at 11psi, but now it struggles to keep 8. It's obvious in the driver's seat that the car is not as strong as it once was.

Gonna get to that this weekend. Been meaning to take that off to check for oil and play

Also, Thank you for the response. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 60-1 trim. I want to push my car to 450hp. I've been thinking about just getting a bigger turbo. I know it's capable of 450, shouldn't be a big problem with it... Worst case scenario, as far as the turbo goes, I'll have to rebuild the other turbo and put it in...

i would seriously do a rebuld on that 7m before you push 450+

New internals have 55k miles on em... I don't have my receipts here with me (they're at the parents' house), but I know that it's a new engine, then brand new pistons and crank. I think it's got new cams too. Without the price of the engine, it's got $5,000 that I calculated in engine and exhaust work. Sounds really good, a deep rumble almost as deep as my dodge truck (daily driver)'s V8 with dual exhaust (I know a whole lot more about american engines than imports, at the moment. trying to change that :) )

I didn't really plan to increase the boost over 15 (The turbo timer I have allows me to turn it up to that. I know it'll hold 15, I just didn't plan to make it do 15 very much). What I want is 10psi through larger hose, therefore, more air (and thus more gas), but no more strain on the engine (except the more hp, of course ^.^ )

A 60-1 trim CT-26 will not last too long compared to a 57 trim CT-26. The 57 is the best compromise for HP and longetivity.
Will it hold 500hp? That's what I eventually want.
