My MAFT-PRO THREAD!

OK so I spent the past hour or so tuning the car....

1. First of all, I think I read somewhere that once the car is warmed up, there is nothing that controls the idle anymore correct? My car idles at around 1200-1350rpm and I can't figure out why. Also my A/F ratio at idle is at 10. If this is 100% not MAFTPRO related, what could it be?

2. I have a AEM Uego 5-in-1 wideband. When I sit in the car with the key in the accessory position (car is not running), I get a flat reading of 18 on my gauge (off the scale)... but when I look at the Tuner Pro software, my A/Fs are all over the place? This is what it looks like:
maft1.sized.jpg

(big picture: http://www.born2drv.com/albums/maft/maft1.jpg)

Even when I'm just cruising around, and the A/F ratio is nice and flat on my gauge but it is still fluctuating a lot in the tunerpro software? Looks like this:
maft2.sized.jpg

(big picture: http://www.born2drv.com/albums/maft/maft2.jpg)

What gives????

3. Between shifts, my A/F ratio jumps very high and sometimes I get a backfire, how do I correct this?

4. In the Tuner Pro software, I don't get all the same tuning sections in the Tables/Functions groups like I do on the MAFTPRO. For example, PT tracking,
and things like this are not in it. Is it because I'm using the .bin, .asd, etc files from 4.60 and not 4.65? Where can I get the files for 4.65 or how do I get them from the MAFTPRO unit? When I download it, it does not update my version on the Tuner Pro software.

I think that's all the questions I have for now :)

you're a bit confused- warm idle is closed loop w/the O2 sensor, albeit @ a slower rate than cruise.

your idle is dang high. look for codes, etc. idle A/F should be right around stoich.

just an FYI- you'll probably need more than an hour or so... ;)

sounds like the ever common-grounding issues. make sure you have the MAFT pro's purple wire connected to the WB's ground.

whaht are you running? AFC mode? translator mode? speed/density?

malloy - i'm running v4.65 on the translator, but i'm using the 4.60 files as instructed from the update of 4.65.

drj - thanks for all the info, i'm running in speed density mode... do you think the backfiring is caused by the A/F reading issues?

anyhow looks like i got a lot of work to do :) i'll bump this thread again when i get a chance to look at all these issues

not crazy lean, it just spikes about +2 to +4 A/F when I shift.... and I am not driving the car WOT at all...

for example i was cruising around the city at 14AF and it popped at 17.5 or so when it backfired during a 2>3 shift... and when I was on the highway merging on i accelerated and shifted from 4>5 and it went from 15AF (was already kind of high) to 18 and backfired really loud. i wasn't pushing it that hard though.

now i've got it tuned much better so the AFs stay around the 11.5-13.5 range, but it still jumps +2 to +3 AF between shifts.

Regarding my backfiring, I've driven around a bit more and I notice this is what happens... I'll be driving along at whatever AF (say 12-14) and then I let off the gas to shift... the AF will climb pretty quick and if I don't shift quick enough, it will go to 18+ and backfire. Especially if I'm driving med-high throttle and let off the gas, the wastegate releases, AF climbs and I get a big pop if i don't shift quick enough.

My tunerpro wouldnt play back at all with 4600.bin & .xdf after i went 4.65, then I went back to 4400 on tuner pro, and It all works again, but.....my a/f readings and timing monitor readings are all whacko on playback , timing can read 80- 108 deg advance sometimes, others 30. I cant wait for new tuner pro, this one sucks ass, I'm happy with the pro though. If you can tell me how to copy a whole window and post it like that, I'll show ya, can't seem to figure that out. Dangit.

Ken,
When you have the graphs on the screen....hit the print screen button, then paste that into a paint program and save it as a jpg, gif or bmp, then you can post it on here.

Thanks a lot Yosef for the setting information. I had mine running a little today and dialed in a couple of the low range settings pretty close I think. I still have a lot of work to go but hopefully with the info you supplied, I can get her running a little better since our setups (other than the turbos) are almost identical.

Btw, are you running the timing monitor part yet or not and which VE table are you using (#1 or 2)?

Thanks again.
Chris

Be careful, those settings are not really that great, especially the Lo, Mid and High Tunes --- I'm sure once I get the AF gauge working properly and the car idling properly I'll have to redo all those numbers again.

Not using the timing functions yet. Which VE table am I using? that's a good question! ;) As you can see I'm still learning how to use this as well.

ok well the ground isn't the problem, is there another reason why i could be getting the oscillating WB reading??

i'm going to clean out my ISC and install a new check valve, etc and hopefully that will fix the idle problem.

My idle problem appears to be fixed for now. I took turbobobs advice and made sure that the PT Tracking was turned off. You can do this by verifying that the Cruise TPS and Idle TPS settings are at 4.90. The reason for the idle surging is that the PT Tracking and the ECU are in constant battle over the AFR and that in turn causes the idle to oscillate. At least on mine it did anyway. Check your PT settings Yosef.

Oh, and btw, you are running VE Table #1, I checked your settings against the VE Sheets.

thanks chriso, i changed the cruise/idle TPS to 4.90 and the FE tracking to 30, it helped to make things smoother but I still have a high idle and the oscillating WB readings.

the shop i had it tuned at first said it was idling fine then they hooked up the maftpro or something and it idles very high and rich, they want me to bring it by and let them play with it some more, we're going to look at a few other things to and try and track these issues down.

if someone has an idea of where we should start looking i would appreciate it. thanks.

I believe the FE Smoothing doesn't really apply to our cars (I could have teh terminology wrong), I think it should be set at "00". See my MAFT Pro thread for the comments from Turbobob to confirm.

The MAFT Pro calculates "Flow Error" when you have a MAF and MAP both connected. You can see it on the LCD and log it. The FE smoothing simply makes the graph more readable. It has absolutely no effect on the tune.

so if that's the case then what else could cause my wideband reading to oscillate like this?

what else could cause a higher then stock idle? anything? my car idles very rich at around 1200-1300rpm?

i'm not blaming the maftpro, maybe we hooked it up wrong, i dunno, just looking for some advice to trouble shoot it. is there a way i can rule out the maftrpo without hooking up the maft again? (i don't have my maft anymore and my intake pipe is now too big and i don't have a reducer or a air filter that would fit)

thanks again.

Also, pull back the butterfly, make sure it closes all the way, mine was high and it was from the t/b, but I dunno if you ever messed with your at all. Did you do any mech work also, the pro should maybe change a/f , but not idle rpm. That sounds more like t/b, or vacuum leak of some sort.
