I don't really have any dimensions of the coil, I just traced an outline in autoCAD (plus I just lent out my laptop). That's why I want to get a test piece cut to make sure the coil fits properly.

Also, I've been meaning to clarify something. Morganson- The six 6mm coil mounting holes (along the bottom), are they threaded? I drew them as a 6mm hole but it it needs to be threaded, I'll have to change it. And if it is threaded, is it a fine or course thread?

I do have the coils here, Adam.
Am i correct, Morganson, in thinking that the coils bottom-mount to this plate, and just the heads of them protrude through the top?

Ooh- one last question, Morganson;
How much length did you cut from the boots? I bought the DG500 coils, so my boots came in a 122mm (4 3/4") length.

Its not nessesary for the hole to be threaded the bolt goes through and there is plenty of room for a nut on the other side.
Yes the coils mount through the bottom of the plate.
As for the boot, I cut mine to 2 3/4 in long.

Yes, but sits flat with the topside of the tab, or the underside.
Try this A/B choice:

Also, it's seems it would also be easier to have a threaded hole so a nut on the other side is not necessary. When taking the coil off, it would be easier to just take a bolt out instead of worrying about a nut on the other side.

Mine was set up as B but can be set up as A as well. The idea was take the plate off as a whole. With these it doesn't matter if they float or are solid.

Well, I guess spark plugs and taking off coils aren't something you do very often so having the bracket come off as a whole wouldn't be bad.

I just think, IMO, that instead of having a but on the bottom, a threaded hole in the bracket would be nice for ease of just backing the bolts out and the bracket comes right off.

Agreed, but i think that the coils would sit alot higher than preferred.
I think that a 'floating' cover would look better, though if you have to pull one coil, you have to pull them all.
Or at least unbolt them all, to remove the cover. But that'd be ok with me.

One thing to keep in mind is clearance of the intercooler pipe that runs across the cam covers for those of us that dont use a ffim. I tried using the number 3 spark plug cover to mount my coils (because I'm a cheap ass) and I had my coils mounted on the top ov the cover and it wouldnt clear the pipe. So the coils being mounted under the plate is probably the best way to go. IMO

if there was a threaded hole that would make things a lot easier all around weather or not you wanted to mount the coils over the plate or under the plate. if you mount the coil under the mounting bolt would just go in from the under side of the plate

Tomorrow ill work on a part drawing and make a coil and attach it to the bracket so you can see what it looks like over and under it.

Yes, but how would you access it?
The only way to unbolt one of the coils in that case, would be to use your Herculean strength, to rip all of the coils off all 6 sparkplugs at once. And lemme tell you- those coil boots are TIGHT.
I had mentioned this to Bryan the other day, and I think that the easiest way to hold the plate firm to the coils, and still be able to 'undermount' them, would be to create a stud onto the mounting holes of the coils:

This way, you can unbolt the plate from all the coils, without dropping any fasteners down into the valley, and just lift it off. Then you can remove coils individually.

My coils mount on top of the plate for easy removal of individual coils, I use 3 mm alloy plate with a nutsert fitted for each coil mounting, this setup uses the cam cover bolts to hold the alloy plate in place and it still allows me to use the cam valley gasket that the old plug lead mounted to.
