random ass dood in a DSM forum said:Any Supra project you take on is going to involve a lot more money than playing with a DSM if you are looking for something that is as fast as your average DSM.
MK4 Supras are quick and have a lot of potential with very little mods. A good car is pricey. A cheaper one will have a lot of miles and suffer from the same things older 1g DSMs suffer from, mainly cracked manifolds, turbine housings, worn vavle seals, etc.
So your thinking of getting an MK3 instead. Bad choice! They had a lot of problems, to start. By the time you fix those little problems and the headgasket problem you are back to the same thing older MK4s suffer from and then your starting off with a small turbo and IC to boot. Ok, you want to upgrade those anyway... $$$. Then you will also need to worry about worn LSDs, trannies, struts, brakes and clutch parts. Btw, I use to have an MK3.
Ok scrap that idea... how about swap a turbo motor into a SC300 instead. Well, now your starting with a car that will have even more traction issues to start considering they aren't even on par with the Supras. Luckily, they aren't as problematic as the MK3s but you have a lot more work collecting parts just to get it to the level of an MK3. Maybe overall a little bit less money than starting with a good MK4 but a lot more time involved putting it together.
One thing I can guarantee is the Mk3 and SC300 projects will nickel and dime you to death. Just buy an MK4 and spread the payments out equally, . :icon_lol:
Choose wisely and good luck.
I suppose by "choose wisely" he means "choose DSM"...
I couldn't help but wonder, how long did he own the Supra? Couldn't have been for long, and it was probably a $500, 300,000mi example.
So...
Do we crack manifolds? I've only heard like once or twice this happening.dummy said:suffer from the same things older 1g DSMs suffer from, mainly cracked manifolds, turbine housings, worn vavle seals, etc.
Turbine housings cracking? Hairlines around the WG Actuator...
Valve stem seals, yeah, but.. so? Any car with 150,000mi and turbocharged will do this.
OK, so the 14b or t25 turbo's are massive in comparison? And which car came with a lil' ol' sidemount IC?your starting off with a small turbo and IC to boot
Worn LSD? Change the fluid.Then you will also need to worry about worn LSDs, trannies, struts, brakes and clutch parts
Trannies? Thrust washers and shift forks I guess, unless he means the W58... Which means he was na-t...
Struts = Wear Item. Especially on a car that's 15+ years old.
Brakes = Wear Item too...
Clutch = Wear Item too........
Spoken like a true hero.Mk3 and SC300 projects will nickel and dime you to death. Just buy an MK4
The problem is, sure the MK3 will nickel and dime you to death. IF YOU LET IT. Do things right the first time and there will be no nickel and diming happening.
I suppose a DSM is a better option as far as reliablilty and repairs?
My friend belongs to the quoted site and told me that there was basically no such thing as a "reliable" DSM. Early 4G63's need to have the timing belt and tensioner done every 20k miles or so to keep the engine from eating itself.
Rad. I'd be wicked happy about that.
Sorry for the semi-rant. I hate misinformation. A lot.
