Unless you wanna do it again, have a machine shop micropolish your crank and rod ends and determine what size bearings you need. They may be stock, but they may not. If you get the wrong size, youre asking for trouble. Always let the machine shop tell you the right size, never assume anything.

For those who keep saying Main bolts, ARP only makes Main studs for the 7m, not bolts. The 12 Pt head on the picture of the rod bolts is just a generic picture. The actual ones you will recieve will look like the stock ones and not have a 12 pt head.

Sigh, I dont have all the money for all of this, Im pulling the damn crank from my GTE engine, its never been under this conditoin and only has like 50k miles on it, Ill just replace all that shit. And b4 u say use that engine, it needs everything on it, all it is is the block, crank, rods and pistons. I realize I have to change the pistons off, but thats fine. What tool do I buy to make sure my main bearings and thrust washers are measured correctly?

I dont even have time to go to a machine shop, I work all week until 530 and 330 on sats. This is fucked up.

Sorry to say this, but machine shop is your best bet. I don't think plasti gauge can actually tell you what bearing size you need before the machining has been done...

yeah, like I said, I have another engine that has no problems, Ill rape its bottom end, change the pistons themselves and put it in my GE block, Im sick of waiting, and thats my fastest cheapest option. I dont have time for this shit anymore. and barely any money, I can afford another car. I found an 89+ engine for $650, he wants an extra $450 for ECU and harness though, mines an 86.5 so I think I need those too.

A new set of rings and a cylinder hone would be required unless you want your engine burning oil.

If you can't afford to do it right once, you sure can't afford to do it wrong and do it twice.

I'll cross my fingers for you and say a little prayer tonight.

Burning oil sucks.
Ask me how I know.

Do it right once.

Since Im doing rod bearings as well, I stopped by the dealer ship and had a talk with one of their technicians.

It seems you'll be fine simply swapping out the bearings, you dont have to micropolish the crank and replace the end caps.

Just follow the TSRM to get your bearing sizes and then plastigauge it when your done to make sure everythings within the correct specs.

If you decide to swap your bottom end then make sure everything fits right, I just found out stock pistons come in 5 different size bores.

Me too Aaron...you were dead right about honing the cylinders and new rings too. Just do it right and do it once is such a simple concept too....:3d_frown:

I just got a call from someone looking for a 1jz clip right now.
Why? Because his second 7m put a rod through the block right after he did a headgasket job on it. I hear that same story about every other day, and I'm not exaggerating. I'm just trying to give good advice, not give you guys a hard time.

Big yes to honing and replacing the rings, Im just saying that the tech said the micropolish and endcaps werent neccessary for replacing bearings.

That may be the case sometimes. And replacing the endcaps is not needed but resizing them is just good practice. Micropolishing is also not needed, but a standard polish is normal procedure for a bearing replacement job.

The point is that I love Supras, and I want to recommend what will make the engine hold together, and the owner get the best return on his investment, not the cheapest easy fix.

You know...having the crank checked out and polishing the journals is just not that expensive. If the $$$ is that tight, would it not make more sense to have it done so it will not be a problem in the future? Having to do it again will cost basically double your overall cost...pretty simple math.

The guy was wanting to buy ARP rod bolts...that alone requires the rods to be resized (as Aaron noted). Rod knock has a 90% chance of damaging the crank and you might not be able to see it with the naked eye. Even getting a crank from a donor motor...how do you know it's not on the verge of rod knock? You don't...that's the problem.

Shops like Aaron's keep busy because of cutting corners in the name of saving a few $$$. I'd park the thing and get me a cheap daily until I could afford to do it right...otherwise, sell the car.

LOL, thanks dude. We have FOUR 7m engines at the machine shop as I type this. We had one that spun a bearing and the crank looked just fine by eye. We measured the damaged journal and it was .040" under the rest! Threw it in the trash.

Aaron - you speak the truth ;)
I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time either...afterall, it is his motor and his $$$.
