LS1 Supra Swap

My supra:

1987 Supra Turbo (7M-GTE), 5 speed, targa roof, light blue. 53,000 miles on the chassis and motor.

Had the head milled and gasket replaced at around 37000 miles, and it blew again at 53,000 miles because a Fel-pro (some sort of composite, I think) gasket was put in and the head was torqued down to the factory specs (against my interest, I had a mechanic do it and he wasn't interested in listening to my pleas.) Took two years or so to blow again, so it wasn't covered by any warranties or anything. I decided I was tired of the 7M, and while the 2JZ is probably a much easier swap than the LS1, there's several reasons why I went with an LS1, and I'd just assume this thread never degrade to that argument.

My goals: Get an LS1 with T56, megasquirt it, and get it going. After that, I'd like to achieve a reliable 500HP, probably do a new driveshaft and see what the rear-end would need, although I've heard the rear-end can handle plenty.

The Camaro
2000 Z28 Auto-tragic. Picked it up for $1300, which I would say was a steal of a deal. It was t-boned on the driver's side by an S10.

Started ripping apart the 2000 camaro that I'm pulling the LS1 out of this weekend (unfortunately, I have to get the transmission elsewhere.) Had good fun destroying the parts of it that aren't relevant to the swap. I'm going to start taking pictures and posting them here for all who care and/or are interested in this sort of thing.

More info will come soon.

What made you decide to use a MegaSquirt instead of running the stock PCM?

I'm excited. Good luck.

Half that the camaro I bought has an autotragic tranny, and from what I understand the computers are different, and half to learn how to set up an engine computer.

I am still weighing my options and know that I could buy a modified PCM pretty easily.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can run a 6spd off the auto ecu. I'm sure you could turn the auto bits off in a tune if it's not a separate controller anyway. Can't remember right now.

Hmm. I hadn't heard that. In that case, I will hold on to the ECU in case I decide to try to use it instead. I hope to get some pictures up of everything this weekend.

Yeah, I'd say keep the stock computer. There just so many people that have already worked out the custom tunes, it'd be a shame to start over from scratch. BTW, HPTuners has a custom OS for that computer that will handle boost.

I was about to say, HP tuners has quite a bit of good stuff on the market for tuning LS series motors. A friend of mine has the LS2 GTO and he bought the HP tuners set-up for it. You can literally program almost any engine parameter you can think of. Its pretty sexy lol

Hmm. That does sound appealing, although, the cost of the HP Tuners setup is several times more expensive than a megasquirt kit. I am definitely going to consider it, though, it does seem like it would be a much easier setup.

How much are the kits going for nowadays? Last I checked it was something like $350?

Hptuners starts at $500. I'd pay the extra $150 for the benefits of: reduced wiring, proven tune, don't have to build a f'n computer :)

$250 for an unassembled kit, an assembled kit runs $350. I am leaning more towards HP Tuners, especially if I can get a buddy to split it with me. It tunes 8 cars, I'm only ever going to use it on one car.

We'll see!

Partied out by the car rather than doing any work yesterday, but hopefully I can make up for that tomorrow by getting some actual work done, maybe finish taking the 7M out of the supra or something. I'll try to get some more pics up soon.

It's sounding more and more like I will be going with HP Tuners or some equivalent.

I guess this weekend I just wasn't meant to accomplish anything, lol. I had some work to do around the apartment and never got out to the garage. Oh well, there's always next weekend.

subscribed!! keep us posted. sounds like an awesome project!!

Cool, glad to have some followers.

Just noticed I forgot pics of the LS1 I pulled out of the camaro. I'm still looking for a T56 and pulling apart that camaro. I think I'm going to cut it in half, maybe even quarters to get it out of the garage and so I can keep all the wheels and junk.

Sorry to read that you are looking for a t-56. I have one in my Cadillac V and if you ask me it is the worst transmission in the world. It is a very sloppy tranny, and have had in the shop more times I can count on one hand ;)
