the LS1 weighs less than the 150hp KA24DE it originally comes with, and it's bad ass...

what? please tell me thats a typo. The ls1 does not weigh less.

The ls1 is a pushrod v8 that weighs in around 575# when totally dressed. The ka24 is a 4banger that weighs in around 385-430 when totally dressed.

I mean its just common sense that a v8 would weigh less than a 4banger since the 4banger is after all half the size. Now I can understand that if one were a cast iron and the other aluminum perhaps maybe. But usually a v8 will weigh more than a 4cyl.

Its funny you say that because the stock KA24DE is a iron block and the LS1 is an aluminum block. From what he has said the LS1 is about 60lbs lighter(give or take a few pounds) but the T56(LS1 tranny) is about 20ish pounds heavier than the stock KA tranny. So over all the car is actually lighter than normal.

I will get more videos tomorrow. We are going to the track to run.
BTW sorry for the shitty video quailty. I have to work on the settings on my phone.

But as to why.....
First every car in the world should have a LS1 in it.
Second he built a sick KA-T set-up which he ran 11.9 but he wanted it better/faster. So he tore the motor down and built a new KA-T set-up. He was pushing roughly around 500hp on 27lbs on the new set-up. The thing was amazingly fast. He was racing a cam'd Camaro SS and his motor decided to take a shit. I guess the head lifted off the block and melted cylinder 1. I don't know why / how that happened but it did. So he got pissed at shitty 4 cylinders struggling to make 500hp so he decided to get a V8.
Third its cheap to do. Bought the motor/tranny/wiring harness for $3300. Made all the motor/tranny mounts himself. Get GTO headers/oil pan and the motor sits in th engine bay just fine.
Fourth what else should he have put in? Wait maybe an awesome SR20. YEA!! Then we could go drift. YEA!! That would be great. And then we could buy a civic as well and make that fast. FUCK SR20's.

LS1 is all aluminum, the 4cly is iron. Yes, LS1 is a pushrod motor.....therefore is LIGHTER than engines of similar size that have ohc, or dohc setups. The 4cly is dohc which also adds some weight. Why do you think chevy has stuck with the pushrod motor??? Do you really believe they don't have any technology and can't build an ohc setup? Or maybe.....just maybe....Chevy has perfected the pushrod motor and realizes that engines of similar size with ohc setups are heavier....and they keeping their performance cars lightweight. Also....making almost 500hp with a good set of heads and cam is also nice.....a much different feel than a 500hp turbo setup out of a 4cly. Area under the curve my friend.

Here's a vid of a miata with an LS1 swap. Bone stock LS1, with just a street tune on it. He ran a best of 11.5 that day. He wanted to hit 11.5 before modding it. Now, it's currently getting a set of heads, cam, intake manifold, and nitrous setup. I'm not trying to sound like a LS1 fanboi....but there's a reason they're going into a bunch of different, non chevy, vehicles....they're light for what they are, fairly cheap to make hp, and they are readily available. I believe there's even an evo running around the middle east with a h/c ls1 swapped in it, lol. The LS1, 2jzgte, 4g63, etc are all great motors, it pretty much comes down to picking your own poison.

And to add on to that he's getting around 25mpg average, 29mpg highway with the cam/tune/LS6 intake manifold. These motors are just badass in everyway. There needs to be a law that every car produced should have a targa top and a LS1 (or LS2, LS3, LS6, LS7) in standard. I would vote for that.

I used to own a 240sx, and the engine is a big iron lump...

Same reason MR2 owners are swapping out their 2.0L 3SGTE's for 3.0L 1MZFE Supercharged Camry V6's: larger displacement at less or similar weight....

Yeah thats why I mentioned the aluminum vs cast iron notion. But regardless its still not lighter. However, im not arguing which motor shouldve been used I am just saying that the ls1 is not lighter than a ka24. And the sr20 isnt the only engine you couldve used the rb series as well actually. But to each their own I guess and I have seen such a thing done before at D1 cant remember if it was a LS1 but it was a v8.

Ok you guys are getting off tangient here. All I am saying is the ls1 is not lighter. I am not arguing over chevys technology.

Well considering the 4g63 is already in the evo and can make huge amounts of hp with little mods is senseless to go through the hassle of making an ls1 fit in an evo and changing the weight distribution and handling of such a great piece of engineering is pretty stupid IMHO, but maybe some people only care about going fast in straight lines. Nothing wrong with that but just senseless to me in an evo. :biglaugh:

I would just buy a 'Vette if I wanted an LS1. I really don't care for the tone of most V8s(LS1 included) to be honest and wouldn't want that sound coming out of a Supra but that's just me.

But I can appreciate the effectiveness of the swap and understand the reasons why.
