The easiest way to do it is get a prototyping board, and cut it to fit the housing, then solder the LEDs onto it.
That's cool. Where's a good place to get prototyping board? I wonder how one might go about wiring a circuit to have the same led's get half voltage for dirving lights, and full voltage for braking?

Thats what a PWM Circuit is used for. It allows you to control the amount of voltage going to the LEDs depending on what triggers the circuit.

Wow JJ, I didn't know anyone else was into LED's here :)
My dad and I just built a flashlight with a Cree in it and WOW. Even though they were $7 a pop, the first light we did was AMAZING, and the second was still about 3x brigther than the original LED.

EDIT: forgot to ask the question I was gonna ask--how the hell do you replace the third brake light? Mine's out and I can't figure out how the get the housing out of the spoiler!

I can't see the video? :(
It says I need a codec to view it.
Shit, now I can't remember what codec I used to encode it. I thought it was a standard intel codec. Anyone else having problems with the video?

Easy, it's all about the resistance. Let's take a small example:
1 LED, it has a 3V operating voltage, draws 20mA of current. Let's assume a 12V source (full brightness of the brakes with the engine off, and a slightly discharged battery)

(12V-3V)/20mA = 450ohm current limiting resistor. This will operate the LED at normal brightness. If you wanted to cut that down, you could use a larger resistor. Something closer to 1Kohm would probably dim the light enough. After that, it's just simple wiring. power the lights through both electrical sources, with appropriate resistances.

As for prototyping boards, I get mine off of Ebay. I also get most of my LEDs off of Ebay, but there's a good site for them too. ledshoppe.com IIRC.

I wanted to do this eventually. I just bought the reconditioned housings from wolfie with the clear corners. I just need to find time (or find someone) to get me the circuit boards and LEDs to put in them.

So I've basically just finished my design on this (puttin that degree to some use!!...and I'm bored as hell) and I think I'm going to try and go ahead and actually make a set. But I want to see what it looks like ON a Supra first. Does anyone happen to have any pics?

www.Hidplanet.com/forums learn all you want there.
Thanks for the link! All the info I need is there. I'm now considering using the popular new Superflux LED's spaced further apart. I'm beginning to think it looks a bit more modern, what do you guys think? (Example pics below)

I've got a spare cracked tail that I will try to separate using the oven method (250 degrees for 5 minutes) Anyone else done this successfully? I might even investigate putting the LED's into the center lens for an NSX-style full width tail light bar!

Why bother with tearing them apart? I'd build the PCB in segments (4) drop them in and solder in jumpers linking them together.
