He is lucky it didn't come through the windshield...that would have hurt ;)

I had a squadron mate hit a turkey vulture on a low level in an F-16 doing 500+ knots. It came through the canopy and hit him in the shoulder...he lost control of the aircraft and ejected. He was off flying status for months...had to have two surgeries. He was very lucky it didn't kill him.

I thought those canopies were bird & bullett proof? I know the top fuel 300mph drag boats use them because of being so strong....

The canopy is made of Polycarbonate...about a 1/2" thick in most places...closer to 3/4" in the front for this reason. I does a very good job, but if a bird hits it right it will break...in this case the impact was just above the canopy rail on the left front. Came right through.

Polycarbonate is actually "bullet resistant"...against 20mm aircraft cannon fire, it really doesn't make much difference ;)

I would have shit my pants if I was doing +160 and a bird hit the windshield. I think it's freaking amazing that the bird didn't go completely through at that speed. I'm glad I drive a newer Mitsu ;).

I hit a Crow two summers ago comming back from the Oregon coast. Me and BIC (Randy) had desided to go down the coast after the Supra show in 05. On the way home doing about 80mph I hit a crow, it hit the hood of my car and left a perfect outline of the bird in the dust on my hood. It looked like the hood graphic from a old Firebird, girl friend felt sick for hours after seeing that one LOL.
