To get the retainers and valve locks in, some people use the pvc pipe method; That is, you get a piece of pvc pipe that's roughly as large in diameter as the retainer, and you cut a window in the side so you can press down on the spring/ retainer, and then reach the locks to push them into place. Problem is- it's really a two-man job.
This is really what you want:

Hopefully you machined the front lower timing cover if your going MHG? Ask me how I know, lol. Super clean man, keep up the good work. Subscribed

yup. timing cover attatched for head and block when machined hhaa

oh and some progress.. (no pics yet sorry)

But i got a few misc. things on.. i was ready to put the head on... but then i checked the bolt for the head stud and i didnt have the damn right socket for it\!!!!... i used arp head bolts on my current engine and now im going with studs.. they are a different size.. damn i was pissed anyway.. figured out that arp head bolts are 12 point 1/2" while the arp studs are 9/16" or 14mm 12 point socket!

Did you do a bore over or a Hone? I don't see why you would spend $$ on maching a block and using the old pistons. You can go stock aftermarkets NEW for around $100 depending on what your looking for ..........

DriftMotion has new stock NPR pistons with new pins for 120.00 plus shipping. It makes sense to get new ones after machining the block. I bought the hone tool at the parts store and did it myself. Took a little off to deglaze the block and put in my pistons.

Nice build. Ill have to try that oven cleaner trick on my next build.

Your right, I see no reason to spend the money on pistons when your not boring the block, just good new rings.

if you are using oven cleaner read the label too lol.. mine said to not let it touch aluminum.. im assuming cuz it'll eat away at it? idk

a little bit of an update. i go to but the head on...and before hand i flipped it over to clean the surface a bit before i put it on.. i forgot that i left the shims in there and a few of them fell out and may have been mixedd up which sucks! but thats fixable.. so no big deal
so the head is on and the studs are in... i try to put the washers in but they didnt fit!! (im an idiot and should have put then in first) anyway.. i lubed each washer and sorta balanced each on their stud.. then lifted the head up so that they would fall in place.. few of them didnt but i got them in eventually..

so then i try to put the bolts on... turns out i have the right size socket 9/16 12 point but it doesnt fit in the bolt area!! FML the socket only fits on the end!! argh this is soo frustrating..
and on top of that.. i think i figured out im allergic to aluminum because i was using my arm to support the head and wherever i touched the head with my armm there are hives..

so.. now im kinda screwd... where the hell am i gonna find the right socket in ths stupid city! argh..

Does anyone have the right socket that they can lend to me? i'll pay Whomever $5 plus ill pay for shipping there and back.. prefferably someone from canada as it would be quicker and easier.. and cheaper..
BTW im using arp head studs

You need a deep 14 six point socket. You can get them at Auto Zone.

Pistons do wear, but not really that much to change them though. I would buy it but since you are in Canada, shipping would cost a little more.

nope. either 9/16" or 14mm 12 point socket for arp studs.. and the 9/16 socket i had was a deep socket.. it was just too wide to fit in the bolt area
