Just how fast is it??

I just did a head gasket on my 1987 NA. Its basically a stock Supra with an automatic. I cleaned up the pistons, valves, intake, it has a K&N cold air system on it and I am running bosch platinum + plugs. All the gaskets, the timing belt, water pump are all new. The head was planed and pressure checked. Except for a smell of burnt oil that only occurs if I drive the car for a few miles and then shut it off.. the car really runs fantastic.
Now.. my observation. Before the car had the minor BHG it was sluggish off the line. It had a nice top end but it wouldn't be considered a fast car to me.
I have driven the car 1000 miles since the rebuild and the retorque and although I really baby it (I'm an old guy) I have gotten on it a few times.
I would put the tranny in power mode and jump on it from light to light. Not floored but around 1/2 of the way down on the pedal. It seems to go from 0-60 exceptionally quickly. The transmission also shifts very positive and crisp. It almost feels like it has a shift kit in it.
I haven't timed it but it seems to me that the car does 0-60 in around 6 seconds tops. Could that be right? From 0-20 its not that fast but once it hits 20 it accelerates like a rocket.
Really makes me want to get a turbo 5spd to add to the collection.

If you think a stock N/A is quick, wait until you drive a mildly modded turbo car. You'll get hooked, and never look back. Then you'll modify it more and more, until you have no money left to pay for you home, food, kids, and you'll sell off all of your possessions and family members (the going rate on people is quite high!) until all you have left is that car. It's a drug. Quit now while you still can!

Yea, I just love the car. I bought it for my son almost 2 years ago when he was 16. He drove it his junior and senior year. He is in college so I gave him my economy car to drive back and forth to school and I use the Supra during the week.
Now I know why he loves the car so much and why he was crushed when there was a possibility that we would have to part it out when the bhg happened and I found some minor damage to the cylinder head. Long story short.. I read the manuals, the Clymers manual, the TSRM manuals, I asked a ton of questions here and I did the entire repair (except for the welding and plaining of the head) myself.
Its just a fantastic car. I just ordered a new rear hatch gasket and bumpers from Jeff at Champion to get rid of the rear leak and the terrible squeaking.
This car does everything good. It handles great, it has fantastic brakes, the AC is crazy cold, it has power everything, its comfortable and its actually good on gas when I drive it.
I am thinking about selling my Valkyrie and buying another one. I would like to get a turbo 5spd this time.

just a small warning with the turbo one, the turbo lag on it is really bad, but on the positive side its a great feeling when that turbo does kick in, make sure the person u buy it from knows how to take care of the car, already had to rebuild mine cuz i didn't ask the guy enough questions to test his knowledge, and make sure they know how to cool off the turbo otherwise u will be replacing it soon lol.

the CT26 isn't that bad for lag... there's much worse. Lag is the approximate time it takes to go from vacuum to boost, i.e. the time between when your pedal hits the floor and your passenger says "holy SHIT!". Boost threshold is what you may be referring to, which is the point in the RPM band where you begin to be able to build boost. If you have any kind of boost leak, both of these attributes can seem to take forever.

In real terms, do away with the CT26 in favour of something with ball bearings and you'll never complain about lag again ;)

Welcome to the addiction.

I laughed my ass off when I read this ...
Then I thought about it , He is right
My friend let me drive his Supra for a while as he worked off shore.
When he came back I'd have to give it back & it sucked
So , I got my own supra . & now Im an addict with 4 supras
2 n/a & 2 turbo projects
& yes , Im always broke

I come from a land down under
Man we have some clueless simpletons here ct26/lag in the same paragraph?

I'm willing to guess it's perceived Lag due to the state of tune of the rest of the car.

JCable: You'll LOVE anything Turbo in a Mk3, I ran my car NA for quite a few years and while it wasn't "quick" it was by no means slow compared to run of the mill standard cars.

Run it against anything even mildly fast and you find 200crank hp in an 3xxx lb car doesn't cut it.

Try an aftermarket exhaust on it, I have a Pacesetter catback, noticeable increase in top end rpm's, lost some low end power, I can tell sometimes because I have to downshift from 5th to 4th alot more often on backroads.

I ran the same Pacesetter system with a 3" Test pipe and it was way too loud, a big difference compared to how it is now with the stock cat but for a daily driver it was far too loud, it was rattling the coins in my center console.. cant imagine it would sound to hot on an automatic.

Ive heard a good upgrade is the factory turbo exhaust, bolts right up.

I think the only way you'd have lag on a CT26 is if the exhaust studs are all backing out and leaking like shit under the hood. :nono:

I can vouch for this -- my car developed an exhaust leak about 4 months or so after I bought it, then soon after it would sound like I had a roots blower when I hit 4k. Needless to say, while it sounded cool, throttle response sucked on my car. Fixed it a couple months ago with new Remflex ehxaust manifold and T4 flange gaskets, and HOLY SHIT, throttle response was INSANE....LOL!

Probably mistaking "boost leak" on an older car w/ leaky intercooler connections for "lag". Although if you're expecting an even distribution of power throughout the rpm range like a V8 then you'll need to adjust your expectations. Slightly higher compression or n/a cams will help but you'll pay a little for it at higher rpm's.

Dunno why I keep hearing people talk aobut loss of low end power with exhaust. Boost = torque, sppol faster and you get torque quicker. I come on boost just over 2K RPM's and by 3 I'm in it pretty deep.

Why you won't have the instant torque response down low of a huge displacement engine, power is only a downshift away ;)
