I like Carlos Mencia's DeeDeeDee song, but JAV and Joe told me he isn't funny. I think he is, but here is Joe Rogan calling him out about stealing material from everyone else in the comedy world. Joe Rogan bashes him pretty good..................verbally.........:biglaugh:

If it's a repost, then I apologize. If you don't care anything about it then don't watch it.

That video didn't make me laugh at all. It actually pissed me off. I can't imagine having someone in my face like that for such bullshit.

No matter what material Carlos has stolen, he's always presented it in a way that makes people laugh, and I had never heard the "stolen" jokes before. Just because it offends other comedians, why should it offend you? Because he is "stealing your laughs from another comedian"? The laughs you probably would not have given, regardless, because you probably wouldn't see all acts from people he's ripped off?

Carlos has gotten just as many laughs from me as Dave Chappelle, because I can RELATE to him. Growing up in SoCal, around hispanic culture, then being in the military with every race, and having a natural dislike for the "DeeDeeDee" morons of the world, I can relate to much of what he says. It's all about presentation.

I have to tell you that if I read a joke on the back of the Playboy Centerfold and a buddy of mine told it to me a week later, and it was still funny enough to make me laugh, I wouldn't be mad or call him out on it. Joe Rogan is enough of an asshole to do just that, however.

If it makes you laugh, who cares if Carlos stole it?

Because he gets paid for stolen material.
Your friend does not, you don't buy playboy for the jokes either.

There is going to come a time when the world will run out of material to joke about. The more creative minds will find new things, for awhile, but you are going to see a lot of recycling.

Look at the music and entertainment business and tell me that it's wrong to get rich from someone else's work. It drives me up a wall when you hear a kid talking about "This new song by [insert name of new artist here]", especially when they have no clue that the song is NOT new, and that artist was NOT the first to sing it. A country singer named Jack Ingrahm re-did Lips of an Angel by Hinder. That song hasn't even been popular for a damn year and a country singer remade it. That is borderline criminal, IMO.
Now let's go beyond music and look at movies. When a Stranger Calls, The Omen, The Haunting - these are all remakes. Love Don't Cost a Thang is the same as Can't Buy Me Love. Gone in 60 Seconds, The Jackal, Flubber.. these movies are all remakes, because people have run out of ideas and want more money. How is this different than what Carlos Mencia is doing?

I'm supporting Rogan I'm not a fan of him.

DM: There's a difference in dealing with the same subject matter and there's going in and taking an exact joke and just rewording it to your specific situation.
The thing with Mencia or Ned, he acts like the material is original and he denies taking it from others. If he just gave credit to people it wouldn't be as big of a deal.
If you listened to the video, George Lopez said almost 15mins of Mencia's HBO special was his material. That's 25% of the show is stolen stuff.
Does that sound alright to you?

As for movies and music; music has infinite possibilities but the popular music revolves around the same styles and tempos usually. The real music that takes risks is the stuff you don't hear on the radio.
As for the country remake you were talking about, you bet your ass they paid the label money to remake that song. Does Mencia pay the other comics to use their jokes?? Bobby Lee even said he stole stuff from his act and that's his "friend."

Mainstream movies are mostly a joke these days so I'm not gonna get into that. :icon_razz

the difference between that and what mencia does is that the musicians and movie guys will freely admit when the work is not entirely their own. like when you buy a CD with a covered song on it, the back cover of the CD will say "all songs written and preformed by _______ except for track # which was written by _____". menca makes it stealing when he passes it off as his own.
being a comic is hard. the ammount of creativaty required is amazing. and then to have someone tell your joke like its theirs? i would hold a different opinion if mencia credited the source of his jokes.

EDIT: ^^maybe i should have read the entire thread before posting, oh well.

Seriously, being from SoCal, do you know how long I've been saying that they need to build a wall across the border? Probably at least 15 years. That isn't really a stolen joke, it's a common idea to many who have dealt with illegal immigrants in person, or read about new reforms in the news for years.
I can see many of your points, but this whole thing isn't holding water with me. I still think that a laugh is a laugh. I guess I would be pissed if he stole a joke from me, and it was my material that I was touring with and making money from. I'm no comedian though, so it doesn't hurt me any - I just laugh when I hear him tell his and other's jokes. Maybe I would be royally ticked if I was on the inside of their world, and maybe I would have reacted like Joe Rogan. I do think that Joe could have confronted him differently. For now, I'll enjoy the laughs.

I do agree that new things that take risks are "unsafe financially" for the artists and studios, which is why mainstream things are repetitive and/or sucky. Maybe they want to try and find something that people are comfortable with, something that ISN'T too far from the norm, and just catchy enough to sell.

he sells out shows in comedy clubs
is a UFC commentator
Fear Factor host

id say hes doing quite well for himself...i dont know how he is a wannabe..whos he trying to be?

apparently, carlos is trying to be bobby lee and avi amongst other comics. If anybody is a wanna be, its him.

however, i cant talk too much shit about carlos..whatever he does, he does it well. sure he may steal some material, but he presents it to where its a working formula. i dont think these comics would be AS pissed off if Mencia wasnt successful.

with that said..Mencia still got owned.

I know I guy training for the UFC, he said it isn't that bad. I saw a VH1 inside thing about Fear Factor, and Rogan whined like a scared girl about one episode where some guy wayyyy smaller than him went apeshit. Rogan is a bitch, Mencia is funny, whether he takes shit or not doesn't really matter, the joke will still be funny no matter who tells it. My 2 cents
