Bosozoku cars, as SupraDerk stated, was a form of protest by the youth of Japan but was mostley associated with Yakuza gang memebers. As also stated by Hellslegion, the big wings and exposed oil coolers were used to resemble the race cars of that era. A good example would be the Tomica R31 skyline. Crazy aero parts were infact derived from the race cars of the time. Gold centered wheels were in style back then as compared to black centerd wheels are/were here. Teh wider you got or more negative the offset on the wheels were, meant you were more defiant. Thats when the crazy fender flaring came into play. That pretty much sums it all.

Yeah, but that looks like an actual race car, whereas the rest of the cars from the genre seem to look ridiculous.

I disagree, They are modeled after race cars, but then made to the owners ideas.

Its all in defiance to the government, Just like why lots of kids like to listen to defiant music, protest, This is Japan's car culture on protest.

They modify their exhaust systems to be extra loud and drive through suburbs at speeds of 5-10 miles an hour, waving imperial Japanese flags and shouting obscenities, occasionally throwing Molotov cocktails and carrying swords/spears, daring bystanders to challenge them.

cool history lesson.

cool racecar... mainly because i like old racecars and their interesting designs as compared to today's. BTW, that car is pretty boxy.

and another question...

is it still a form of protest? or did it just...stick.

if it just stuck, i find it very odd. but then again once i saw a car covered in broken cd's... and one with toy dinosaurs glued all over. so if it did in fact stick and has no political stance... maybe its just to stand out and not be good looking...
