So, I took it down for a rebuild, and turbo upgrade in April. I got it running, only to have the bottom end fail like a month later. (It was my fault). So, tow my car 700km back home, pull the 1JZ out, buy a 2JZ, make a 1.5JZ, and put it in, get it all running.

Then, like a week later, the 2JZ bottom end develops a fucking rod knock. Aaaaah!

The worst part is I've since gone back to school, and have zero extra money to rebuild a damn 2JZ, plus it's getting colder outside, and I have to give up the garage (My brother and I get use of the garage in the summer, my parents get it in the winter), so I have nowhere to work on it.

I'm going to have to trailer it to a storage place for the winter, and rebuild it next spring it seems :(

I miss boost.

WTF dude? I thought the 2JZ bottom end was "unkillable!" How did you manage to take down the beast?

Ever see the video on youtube of the kid with rod knock in his MKIV? Its not unbreakable if its abused or neglected.

Or ignored the redline
Well, I did take it up to 7500 quite a few times. :)

The 1JZ was the result of me forgetting to replace the worn thrust washers, and installing a 3200lb pressure plate. Ironically, the motor failed the day after I received the replacement washers.

As for the 2JZ bottom end, I'm pretty sure it was just a bad motor. The importer I got it through I've had negative dealings with in the past, but it was the only motor in town.

I guess instead of inspecting the bearings, and going "Yeah, they look fresh", and tossing in some assembly lube, I should have actually replaced them all.

reving it that high shouldn't of been an issue (unless the engine was loose to begin with). I ran mine up to 7k all the time bouncing off the limiter in 1st and no issues.. People have run the stock 2js to 8k+ without issues.

GL on the rebuild

Yeah, that was the limiter I had set on the 1JZ. I asked a local tuner about it, he goes "I take my 2JZ to 8k". So, I left it.

I've only heard of 1 engine that failed from a rev related issue.. A local chick who bounched off the revlimter for liek 5 seconds (because spinning, revlimiter was 8600) on a new shortblock (they've been known to have bearing issues).. she was making ~ 700whp as well

if it makes you feel any better my supra is my DD.

I think i'm getting rod knock.

i have no other car.

i cant buy a new car without first selling the supra

i dont know who will buy it now, and what i would tell them. i dont know if its rod knock but i dont want to know because if i do i'll be morally obligated to mention it. hell i am now and i'm not certain.

if i wait longer i might just develop underivable rod knock. have a dead car, and waste 135 dollar parking permit and ride the bus until i figure out what the hell to do. sell the car for measely amounts (i put money into it, windshield, BHG....) and loose money. or keep it, rebuild the bottom end over some vacation and sell it while it runs good. (holy crap i'm not ready for that...i just cant bring myself to do it during school. even during vacation, and its dangerous i have no engine lift)

so yeah i'm in a rut. i dont know what to do. I want to just get a 4runner and hope its reliable and at least will never need internals worked on. for a few years at least. if i diagnose a serious issue with my car and cant fix it, i'll be forced to go all out until bust or sell it and loose money, then loose much more buying another car that is probably nowhere near as nice.

it sounds like you have another car? i don't nor can we afford one. =(

i have no job this semester (next i should...)

so yeah. actually its not as bad, i dunno you spent much more probably but maybe my dilemma will help you feel better.

i love cars. but today i said "i hate cars"

i've never said that...not that i can recall anyhow. its...sad.

Well, I managed the impossible. I pulled teh oil pan off without removing anything else from the car!

Anyways, I now have access to the whole bottom end. I'll inspect it tomorrow to see if any of the bearings have spun. I hope they didn't. If not, some new bearings, and it'll be good to go.
