Issues Calibrating the TPS on an 89 supra 7m-gte

Well after having installed a new CPS and timing it and all that. I decided it would be agood idea to calibrate the TPS. I've used this site http://mkiiisupra.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=12132&highlight=guide+cam and the TRM. However my three "non supra experts" includeing myself. Can't figure it out. Does anyone know how to this. The Throttle body is all ready out and cleaned. However we can't seem to understand the whole Ohm meter issue of the book saying turn the TPS till it "deflects". I don't understand it. I don't know any supra guys here in So.Cal and the Socal Supra dudes were makeing fun of me because I am a noob and am still tring to learn these things.

Simple and plain the easiest way to setup the TPS:

1. install the TPS with the screws loose enough to rotate the TPS
2. Bridge the Diagnosis terminals like you'd check for codes
3. Rotate the TPS in very small increments until code 5-1 stops flashing (if it is at all)
4. tighten screws

I have a spare TPS connector that I swiped from a junk harness. That's what I always used to adjust the TPS. Unclip the stock connector, plug in my pigtail, bam. No removing the TB- it makes the thing a breeze. :)

Dunno how any of you are able to get to the bottom screw with it on the car...

One a side note, a digital meter SUCKS for setting it...

i used a small rachet/extension/1/4"/phillips head combo and just snug the bottom one. i tighten the top much more since i can't the bottom that much with it being to tight to get at.

I know we just calibrated it and it meets spec. However the car started and felt good I took it up and down the road and it ran beautifully. I come out an hour later and it doesn't wanna start again. the starter makes a nasty noise and it wants to start but it doesn't. I was really low on fuel so we got some and put it in. we are going to wait a while and then try again. Could it possibly be the Cold start injector? its never been changed and I haven't checked it. CPS TPS and PLUGS and WIRES IGNITER AND COILS ITS GROUND are all good. Any thoughts?


P.S. its not the starter it has been changed.

Well its like it wants to start its like if doesn't have fuel. I got spark. Its very strange. But the car always cranks. I don't think its the starter at all. It just started earlier.

Like you know when you over crank the starter and it starts makeing a crunch sound? It does that. I dunno I dunno I dunno I dunnno I am geting close to calling it quits I've done so much to this car and read everything and followed the book and OTHER THING KEEPS BREAKING ON IT!

After tring a few more times and kicking and screaming at the Supra. It turned on LMAO. Its wierd I don't get any codes but 51 but who cares. The car makes a weird winding sound. its not the power steering but it sounds like its comeing from the front pulleys. I guess I didn't notice till now. Maybe the Alternator or the fan clutch?

There's so much crap thats wrong with it I dunno. Gotta love them previous owners. I have to fix everything piece by piece.

I absolutely agree with the use of an analog meter to set the TPS. It is sooooo much easier to see when it is set correctly because the meter's needle moves sharply towards zero.

I have tried to get to the bottom screw on the TPS with an offset screwdriver, but that only seems to result in further frustration. The ratchet-extension-phillips bit combo sounds promising, though. It is actually very easy to remove the two bolts holding the IAC valve in place and move it out of the way so you can access both TPS screws.

Great idea on using the spare TPS pigtail, but they are hard to find and like gold when you do, as every single one I have seen on a vehicle is broken already.

As far as having to fix everything piece-by-piece, I can totally identify with that. I went completely through my car and engine before finding a tankful of rust. Only reason I found that was that I had already been through everything else. Now the car is a real beast, and well worth all of the time spent trying to fix it. Don't give up on it, but sometimes it can be helpful to take a step back and breathe deeply.

you are not within the proper range for your TPS, regardless of what your meter and TSRM says. If you would've followed my directions in the first place this wouldn't have happened.

this is a start to how i have found the best way to set early toyota tps. try this.

1. install the TPS with the screws loose enough to rotate the TPS
2. jump the Diagnosis terminals like you'd check for codes
3. hook up timing light
4. start engine run to opperating temp.
5. as you rotate the tps you should notice at some point, the timing all the sudden advances or retards like 4-5*. (this is the idle contact closing and the spot you are looking for)
6. now you want to move the tps so the timing is at full advance (without touching the cps) and slowly rotating it until you see the 4-5* jump down in timing. stop and tighten the screw on top.
7. reset timing back to 10* if it is not anymore
8. check that as soon as you move the throttle the timing jumps and then advances smoothly as high as you rev it.
9. tighten lower screw however you see fit (just remove the iac)
10. recheck timing, and jump in timing as soon as throttle is moved.
11. remove jumper and enjoy

Or just remove the throttlebody and do it it the easy way...

It's not like removing the throttlebody is hard (yes I still have coolant lines to mine), and while it's off you can clean it!

:nono: way excessive. You should not have to mess with the timing at all for this code.

OP, i would strongly advise against this method.
