Is it worth it to part out?

Hey. Last night my head gasket blew (pretty damn sure thats what happened) on my 89 turbo and had to get it towed to a family friends shop. Tomorrow (Monday) he is gonna take a look at it and see what the damages are and how much it will be to fix it. Im guessing around $800 or so? Just a guess.

My dilemma is, idk if its worth it more to fix it or part it out and get another car. What do you guys think? is a partout worth the effort or is the market too small that it wouldnt benefit me? Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it.

A partout is a lot of effort, between literally disassembling and entire car, and having to ship everything.. taking payments.. meeting up with people.. etc.. Another negative is that you're taking another MK3 out of the game. Also, nobody's got any money lately, things aren't selling, especially stock MK3 parts.

You get back what you put into it, if you aren't willing to spend $800 on some important engine work, what are you willing to spend money on? This clearly wasn't the right choice of car for you, and no car you buy for cheap will just run forever.

You know what? Part out, it'll make my car worth more.

i know what is entailed in a partout. i parted out a 97 tiburon and made my money back and then some. its just another option that is going through my head. thats why i was just wondering about the market right now.

I would only part out an mk3 if the body itself is not worth repairing example: rust, bad bodywork, was in a bad accident and pulled back into shape (which makes it weaker), but if you have a clean body, id keep it and put a MHG on that 7M with some new factory head bolts or ARPs. Clean mk3s are very hard to come by.

EXcuse me If I sound so rude ¨ READ THE TRSM¨ do it your self . I did pull a motor out and installed a new gasket in with no freaken experience why tha heck cant you do it. If you low in cash just fix it for less that 200 with a oem gasket. Have the head inspected for any warped surfaces. Can anyone donate or sell this kid a oem gasket for cheap. I mean I hate to see this happen because I´ve gone through the same issues back in 2004. If I find you a oem gasket that I left at a friends house just pay for shipping and lil cash to buy me a combo at JAck in the box lol.

^^^^ This...... lol But really dude, man up and do it yourself! You said a family friend owns a shop, your in the best zone you could ask for right now. Ask him if he'd let you use one of his bays to do it yourself! I had a buddy that did that for me wen i had my miata and the trans went, he said if he does it he'll charge me.... but if i did it in his bay i can use his tools and he'll help wen i get stuck, i just had to buy him lunch from time to time Really, ask you buddy if he can teach you how to work on your car. You might find he'll be MORE open to that them fixing your car LOL

^^^ believe me, i've asked that. he wouldnt be able to let me borrow a bay since its a small shop with only 2 bays and his lot is full with customer cars. I would rather do it myself, but time is my biggest problem. I am in engineering school which doesnt leave me much free time. and the free time i do get is filled up with work. also, this is my DD so i need it back ASAP. this is a tough situation for me because i would rather do it myself, but his shop is my only option. I guess the decision maker on whether i keep it or not is gonna be the price for him to do it.

its fairly clean with small rust spots forming on top of rear wheel wells and lower corner of drivers door. other than that its fairly clean. havent looked underneath in awhile tho.

Parting it out doesn't fix the problem of you needing a car now. Parting out takes time...lots of it. You're better off buying a cheap beater and parking the supra until you can get it fixed (takes time to fix too).

Parting a car out never gets rid of every piece, IMHO it's wasteful and usually kills cars that should still be on the road (I swear I could write a huge rant on society as a whole not fixing things but throwing it away and buying a new one)

parting out does takes a lot of time and effort, i know this. like i said i parted out an entire 97 tiburon. I have no place to keep the supra if i bought a beater. lol. i know what you mean.

UPDATE: he is taking a look at the damages today and will get back to me this afternoon/evening hopefully. we will see what he says.
