I have a new Garrett GT3076R (.57trim) internally gated turbo, that I'm contemplating making into an externally gated unit. Is it as simple as just "welding" the waste gate flapper shut, and buying a header manifold w/ a external wg? or is there more to it than meets the eye?
I don't want to deal with a boost creep issue when pushing this turbo hard on high boost. And, nothing beats the sound of a Tial wg wide open on the dyno!!!

Would'nt you just be better off changing out the rear to a non-gated housing ? I'm assuming it would probable flow much better and also I think the gt30 internally gated housing are the same as gt28 housings as far as i can remember anyway .

Please post up some dynos when you get that thing running , thats gotta be interesting .

Well, it's actually a "hybrid' turbo, because the exhaust housing is off of a Ford Powerstroke turbo! I really didn't want to spend anymore $ on it, just because it probably would function just fine as is. Then you're are saying that the closed off internal flapper will limit the flow?

Breezn-

Lets get a pic of that power stroke turbo. 75% of the "powerstroke" turbos were reverse flow. If you indeed havea reverse flow powerstroke turbine housing on a Gt30, then we have a major problem.

Also, there was a powerstroke turbine housing that used a "wastegate" flapper to litterally close off the exhaust of the engine and turbine.

YOU DO NOT WANT THIS HOUSING EITHER.

Get us some pics, and we'll go from there.

Jon;

Here is the link to the thread that shows the exducer side, with the elbow removed, and no wg flapper installed. I don't know if that helps you, but I can get more pic's tommorow, when I have my tools (in my sons car!) The turbo builder is reputable, so I doubt that he would put together something that would not work well! I am currently running one of his .57 trim CT upgrades, and it has worked flawlessly so far. http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23686
CHRA serial #'s match with Garretts' website info, for the GT3076R, except that the compressor A/R is .70, instead of the .60 listed by Garrett.

Hmmm never seen a powerstroke housing like that but oh hum.

That housing will work just fine breezen. Get a divorced flange from (you can choose but I have them available) such as this:

GT Series flange

Or get a T3 series like this and drill it out (as Im not sure if the GT flange will fit your housing or not)

If you're set on using an external wastegate, you could use the top flange in the pic MDC showed (the one w/ 2 pipes) and route the bottom pipe down to your wastegate. A lot like Randy's DDPs...in fact, he could likely custom make you one if you supplied the turbo flange and wastegate/flanges. Unless you wanted it to be very loud when the wastegate opens, you could even have it routed back into the main pipe. From the pics you provided, it looks like the flapper is part of the flange...a new flange without the flapper is what you would need.

Jdub;

The wg flapper is actually inside the turbo exhaust elbow. The exducer side just has the hole, as pictured. I want to use a header manifold, so blocking off the hole is my first choice, if possible.:icon_bigg
Heres' a couple of cell phone pic's of the turbine side. And one of the turbo mounted on the stock p&p 7M manifold.
(Sorry for the quality!):aigo:
Edit: And two more of the compressor opening (For the hell of it!)

Ahhh...the hole should not cause a problem w/ turbulence. Just get the new flange and have it welded on your elbow.

Would it definately need to be welded?,:icon_conf or would bolting it down do it? Seems like it would seal well, if both surfaces were prepared correctly.

You mean like a block off plate...that should work if both sides were perfectly flat. You would need longer studs of course.

You guys both lost me here...

If you want the wastegate on the header:

-Bolt the flange as I pictured above on the back of the turbo with a 90 deg downpipe welded to it (the flange).

If you want the wastegate on the flange:

-Bolt the flange as I pictured above to the back of the turbo. You will need a hole drilled in the flange. You will weld a 90 down pipe elbow to the top, and a 45 or 90 deg pipe elbow to the bottom, with the wastegate at the end of the pipe.
