Few questions for anyone who has done it. How long does it last if you do it RIGHT?

What is the absolute best way of going at it ( Prepping, Materials ect )? Price being no concern ( Assuming you'd pay crazy amounts for Shadow Grey anyway ).

Pictures of right after, and if you can current?

I found this thread, and it certainly is inspiring... but doesn't give you an idea of how well it turned out in the long run ( Sorry, its only on SF ):

I haven't used my painted interior yet, but I used the SEM products. I used their vynil prep for vynil, and their plastic prep for the rest. The paint seems to have adhered very well to the vynil parts, I can't scratch it off with my fingernail. On smooth plastic surfaces however, it comes off very easily, even after using their plastic prep. (rough/textured plastic is not as bad). They recommend also using their plastic adhesion promoter, and I wish I had now. If it works well, then overall, I'd say the SEM is the best way to have a NEW looking interior that should last. I would still suggest buying new seat covers though.

At the automotive shop where I bought the stuff, the counter guy said one customer used it on his motorcycle seat and it has not worn off after a lot of use.

I did it with VHT dye in a spray can on my interior and it came out really nice and is pretty durable. I did notice the smooth pieces do not hold the color as well too, but it takes a lot to scratch it (screwdriver slipping, etc). The dash and textured or leatherish panels show no wear even with pretty heavy use (my feet touch the door panel all the time and it's still perfect). Sadly I crashed this car =( If you want the interior I plan on selling it since my new shell has a pretty good grey interior and I don't really feel like changing everything over. That and red looks weird with a grey car...

I did mine, as well as a friends with the duplicolor vinyl/fabric paint. For prepping I used scotch brite pads (the red I believe, but it's been a while) and some soapy water. Seemed to hold up with no problems.

My car that I did it to has since been dismantled, but my buddy's is still together. The next time I see him I'll snap some photos.

Also, for the hard plastic pieces I used Krylon Fusion and after the soapy water method sanded with 2000.

Hope that helps.

I've used SEM and VHT in the past w/ great results. I cleaned the pieces w/ a mild cleaner (Simple Green), scuffed them w/ green ScotchBrite pads, and cleaned again the wiped them down w/ rubbing alcohol, and then sprayed. Light coats. Looked and felt like it came from the factory that way! VHT has a "matte black" that is perfect! They offer it in plastic or vynil formulas.

I use duplicolor vinyl and carpet paint on mines. It turned out realy nice on the vinyl, plastic and leather. The capet would need a cuple extra layer of paint and need to sit a little longer to dry but in the end it turn out realy nice. I got a cuple of pic but its kinda blurry so bear with me .

i used the duplicolor vynil dye on my gauge hood i made for my mk2. its on page 14 of my cardomain for my 84. worked great. just have to clean it VERY well or the dye wont dye. it is an actual dye, not paint. it sprays on and soaks in and dries very quickly. im gonna use it on my headliner and stuff as well very soon to finish my enteiror. everything else is already black. got a full black leather interior including the black carpet from an 82 mk2. just not the front seats. they were junk. gonna buy some corbeau's later.

i tried WASHING it off once it tried with hot watter and dish soap. i scrubbed the shit out of it and it didnt even darken the white rag i used 1 bit and none came off. i seriously doubt it would rub off. you just have to have the seat extreamly clean so the dye can soak into the vinyl.

I used duplicolor vinyl and cloth dye on my interior and krylon fusion for the plastic parts. I haven't done the seats, carpet, or headliner yet though. What I did was scrub everything with soap and water and then wipe down with rubbing alcohol to remove oils/residue/whatever junk. I then put many, many light coats on. I think I used 12 coats on the dash and it hasn't faded or rubbed off or anything in the almost two years since I did it. I'm not so sure about doing it to the seats though, I'm thinking about just getting new seat covers instead as well as door panel inserts.

the seats are polyester or something, and I didn't have good luck with it sticking, plus it makes the fibers really hard, so it loses the softness, if you know what I mean...

Here's the only pictures I have of my Celica interior before I sold it :(

Celica&

Black%20Interior.JPG

Door%20black.JPG

The interior used to be blue, I got a blue Supra interior, dyed it black, and modded it into the Celica.

What I noticed:

If you have put armor-all on the vinyl recently, clean it VERY THOROUGHLY. Soap and water is all I used, but you may want to use a little bit of an alcohol wipe afterwards to dry out the vinyl a little so it will soak up the color easier.

The interior stood up surprisingly well. It was difficult to get off, provided you did a good job cleaning the panels.

If you look at the door panels, you'll notice I sprayed the fabric as well. This took a lot of dye to do, and made the fabric sort of crunchy to the touch. If I did it over again, I would probably sew in some black fabric rather than dying the old stuff. It did it's job at making my POS look less POS-like on the inside. Nothing worse than having a girl that doesn't want to ride in your car.

Edit: It's duplicolor vinyl dye for those who care.

i didnt dye my seats. dont plan to either. my mk2 had black/gray leather. the seats i put black seat covers on. for the carpet i got black carpet out of an 82 mk2 along wit hthe solid black door panels and rear side panels. i havent dyed any cloth with it but the dash i dyed it wont even scrub off. works great. now for the seats my friend is dyeing, they are vynil not cloth so should hold up just as well.

I used the interior spray from eastwood for every piece of the interior except the seats but that stuff works phenominal even for the carpets at the bottom of the doors. The kit comes with the 3 stages you need to clean and primer the panels and all the panels match even between plastic and vinyl.
