ok so im going to go through dc inspection in the morning
problem is i have an exhaust leak at the base of the manifold (one of the studs is has warped threads and i cant get any bolt on it) and some wretched high pitched whining when the car is rolling. the other problem is that the clutch master cylinder is leaking on my foot and staining the carpet not to mention the parking brake does not hold properly
i have like 12 hours to fix it all
any advise would be greatly appreciated
thanks

btw my car is an 87 na hardtop

I dont know how to remove the stud from the manifold or where to get a replacement

bring the stud to home depot and get a bolt that can replace it......clutch master good luck getting a new one in 12 hours but that won't fail an inspection just throw a rug over the stain.....and take the boot off the parking brake lever and tighten the cable by turning the 10mm nut....if that doesn't work take the rear wheels off and pull out the rubber stopper on the brake disk and adjust the drum brake shoes by sticking a flathead screwdriver in the hole and spin that little gear (trsm will help with this)

No.

Sounds like your car has some real mechanical issues going on. Why dont you stop driving it until you can get it fixed properly?

exactly. it sounds like there are several areas that need attention. Congrats for getting some of the items fixed up, now just spend the time and get the rest fixed correctly!

i put mine in for test a while back with part of the exhaust system missing. it absolutel sailed through the emissions tests no bother and its got 100k miles on the car.

There are more issues with the car. A cat wont fail on its own. There is a very good reason why you need a new one. The cause of the failed cat is the reason you failed your NOx test. I would suspect you have a very rich/poor running car.

Best advice ever: Don't wait until the day before your inspection to fix the problems with the car! Fix them as you find them.

i just got mine done like a month ago i live in VA just outside of DC and i allmost failed i got 99 out of 100 posible for HC ppm at 25 mph. i think it was because the car hadent been driven in over like 3 months and i just shot up the street and got it done so it wasent very hot.

The most common cause for increased NOx emissions is higher than normal combustion temperatures. Common causes can be a malfunctioning EGR system, engine overheating, or misadjusted timing. These factors can also be part of the catalyst failure. The ECM will try and adjust for these conditions with more fuel, I.E. running rich.

hmmm ok so first things first i guess ill be replacing the cat
the next thing is that ur not the first person (today) to say somthing about my egr probably being messed up
so do i just buy another egr valve or is there a way to clean it
im just wondering cause im trying to get this thing resolved by monday (if thats at all possible)

im also starting to wonder if the cat didnt fail and if the egr is the real culprit

The cat would be the last thing I replaced. I wouldnt want to damage my brand new cat with a problem that hasnt been resolved.

ok so i took a look around under the hood and i got an idea (after i tested the egr valve with a vac pump and found it to be in good shape) maybe the 20 year old vac lines might be causing the problem

the vac lines look like the had never been changed so i started changing them out, i only have two left to go but the car feels a whole lot better
does anyone know if vac leaks will cause an absurd increase in nox for the exhaust?

im also wondering if i passed hydrocarbons and CO if the cat is actually doing its job
