Second, the air force does a lot of damage and army helicopters do a lot of damage, but both of those are combat support elements, and they are incapable of actually holding territory. I agree that traditional warfare is extinct; you no longer go out onto a battlefield and shoot at the other guys who are wearing different uniforms and are located accross from you. With this war on terror, the battle is in cities and communities where people live and the enemy can look like anything or anyone. You need boots on the ground to get the job done in that situation, but at the same time if you run accross something that you can't handle, i.e. you're taking fire from a group of enemy that is holed up in a building, it's a lot less life-costly to call in air support and destroy the building than to try to send soldiers into the building. THis is especially true with the accuracy of modern weapons. When the air force was dropping dumb-bombs on large area targets or targets that didn't have any friendly troops too close to them, it limits what they are able to do. However, when a bomb can target individual floors of a building, it's much safer to use it in extremely close support of friendly troops. The air force may get credit for the kill, but they aren't the only ones at work.
This guy knows what he's talking about. The ground war is essential to our cause today.

To tell you guys the truth, all of the inter-service bashing that was in the 70's through the 90's is starting to go away. The services have found that victory is achieved multiples faster when we work together in coordination. A big example of this was when the Gulf War kicked off; Army attack helicopters were incapable of finding their way to punch a hole in Iraqi radar, so they had our MH-53s, which have greater nav solutions but almost no attack capability, guide them in.

Who cares about the war in Iraq, we need to focus on the real issues at hand. Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie stopped being friends and there might not be a new season of "The Simple Life" as a result.

At least the second sentence made it all a sarcastic statement.

DM-I don't really agree with inter-service bashing. We all have a role to play and we all need to understand that. I think the Army is a little cheesy, calling anybody E-5 and up "Sarge," etc., but the Army has it's place, too. I have always gotten along well with those from other branches. Yes, I have worked side by side with them all.

E-5 - E-8 " Sergeant"

There are two ranks for E-8 -- Master Sergeant and 1st Sergeant. MSG being more administrative, 1SG being the more leadership role, and is thought of as a higher rank than MSG. 1SG is always addressed as "First Sergeant."

Now there are six E-9s.

One Sergeant Major, and four Command Sergeant Majors (Some of these guys look like fucking Sergeant Slaughter, and talk like the guy from mail call on the history channel.) Their all addressed as "Sergeant Major."

Then we have the last Non-Commisioned officer enlisted rank of Sergeant Major of the Army. As in... of the ENTIRE Army. You'll find this guy in the Pentagon with the GOA. There is no one with this rank at this time. Nor, is there a five-star General of the Army atm.

Just a quick lesson, and I'm bored. :D
