Second, the air force does a lot of damage and army helicopters do a lot of damage, but both of those are combat support elements, and they are incapable of actually holding territory. I agree that traditional warfare is extinct; you no longer go out onto a battlefield and shoot at the other guys who are wearing different uniforms and are located accross from you. With this war on terror, the battle is in cities and communities where people live and the enemy can look like anything or anyone. You need boots on the ground to get the job done in that situation, but at the same time if you run accross something that you can't handle, i.e. you're taking fire from a group of enemy that is holed up in a building, it's a lot less life-costly to call in air support and destroy the building than to try to send soldiers into the building. THis is especially true with the accuracy of modern weapons. When the air force was dropping dumb-bombs on large area targets or targets that didn't have any friendly troops too close to them, it limits what they are able to do. However, when a bomb can target individual floors of a building, it's much safer to use it in extremely close support of friendly troops. The air force may get credit for the kill, but they aren't the only ones at work.
