My question is why did it fuse?? Something caused a reaction to fuse those to metals together. Maybe a small leak into the threads? Something was in the housing or on the bolt and threads when you replaced it last. I would use a air compressor and dry out / blow out any antifreeze that drips into the housing before you thread the bolt back in. Just a thought.

Aluminum and steel aren't friends.

Thats the jist of it I think.

I've had both of my original bolts snap off while tightening because they where so badly overtightened from a previous owner they were stretched...

Replaced with some spares I had and they've been fine. I don't use any silicone there either, just clean the surfaces and a new t-stat o-ring...

IIRC the stock bolts aren't normal steel either...

My guess is they didn't want people using a big 3/8 ratchet to tighten them down and strip out the aluminum, which many people seem to do anyways.

Sounds right. This, like everything else I have read on the MA70, seems to evade me. I have never seen it happen on one of my 5 Supras, or any Toyota when I worked there professionaly. Some time ago.

What I have seen on Toyota, relating to what Cy said is the ears breaking off from gorillas claming down on the bolt when the housing wasn't straight.

Tried that gaboon... Someone had replaced the lower bolt with steel bolt. Which fused to the aluminum. Broke the easyout off in it.

Antisieze ftw! I don't understand why people don't use this stuff more often:-(

Yeah mike that broken bolt came out very easy and having a Bridgeport to use makes it much easier. I just posted the video too add too list of people who broke a bolt in that fucking thing!

I had one snap off (top one) - after seeing those bolts (6mm, btw, IIRC - not 8mm) - I put class 10.9 bolts in with antiseize.

Never a problem again!

same here, minus the anti-sieze

Add me to the list of people who have broken those damn thermostat housing bolts. Except BOTH of mine happened to break when i was trying to loosen them. Unfortunately i had stupidly forgotten there was still some pressure in the system and when bolt number 2 went SNAP, my thermostat housing cover went BOOM lol.. whole thing popped off like a gun shot and i had coolant all over me lmao.
