Weird. I have had 8 Supra's 6 of which i removed that housing and got Lucky I guess. Since I am going with a 1JZ now, I hope I won't run into that issue. Sorry about the bad luck there. Sounds like you run into stupid shit like I do.

damn. what a pita Mike.

doward good info to know but you'd have to put a yellow sticky somewhere to remember to do this. I would imagine a bolt with allen head would be better??

jetjock. lost me on coiled part.

It would do better just make sure it's made out of stainless, and use an allen wrench.

Steel doesn't play well in alluminum. :(

As for "coiling" http://www.emhart.com/products/helicoil.asp

That should answer your questions. :)

Edit Beat by JJ and IJ.

But Timesert > Helicoil.

How far in was it broke off, flush? If not f-in weld to the bolt and spin out! Then heli-coil it! Replace all those aluminum threaded setups.

Question why where the exhaust stud holes all not heli-coiled from the factory. Who puts a standard stud that will rust into an aluminum head?

Sorry for your troubles,
Seth

Done that on both supras I've owned both on the first T-stat replacement. First had to be drilled out, but I got lucky the second time and had enough to use some vice grip magic. The placement and design of the 7m housing is horrid. I keep a jar of anti-seize, it is necessary.

I've had 15 of my own Supras and have worked on dozens of customer and friends cars. First time I've ever done it.

I've got the old housing on my work bench, the bolt is literally fused into the damned thing.

Please let us know if you find the cooling system problem. I'm suddenly having similar temp spikes that last 5-10 minutes, then vanish completely without explanation.

It "should" fix the spike problem. I had the same thing happen this spring with my autozone special t-stat after my build. Went to toyota spent the $21 for a new T-stat, gasket & topped off the antifreeze. Installed it in 10 min. (no bolt breaking going on here) and problem fixed.

Sorry to read about this problem Mike  Always pisses a person off when a 5-10 min. job takes the entire day to fix.

I'm scared now. I am literally sitting at my desk with a thermostat in hand, ready to go out and install it. Why did I open this thread? I am DOOMED! There is no way that Murphy's law will let this go smoothly now. lol

My question is why did it fuse?? Something caused a reaction to fuse those to metals together. Maybe a small leak into the threads? Something was in the housing or on the bolt and threads when you replaced it last. I would use a air compressor and dry out / blow out any antifreeze that drips into the housing before you thread the bolt back in. Just a thought.

Hose clamps on thermo housing, it's ftw.

LOL, a old mk3 was running like that, that and a Sheetrock screw to help hold the housing together.
