I know some of you are running the Stinger EMS. I know some of you have had trouble fine tuning your cold start issues.. and find your cars idling at 400RPM; dying at any jab to the throttle..

I started searching around for a simple valve, similar to a VSV that comes on MKIII's from the factory, but a 'VSV' that will flow more air. I found that using the VSV would only give an increase of about 50-100 RPM's.

I was looking all over for a solenoid that would do the trick but not break the piggy bank. bingo...

(description: 1/4" Barb, Chrome ELECTRIC SOLENOID VALVE For Air Horn)

I ordered it, had it in a few days, and had it installed in less than an hour. Here's what I did.

1) Found a post-throttle body vac. source that was large enough to accommodate the 1/4" valve. I avoided using vac lines that connect to the ECU and fuel pressure regulator as not to cause fuel issues. I chose my BOV vac. line.
2) I tee-d the line and ran it to the brass barb on the solenoid
3) I fitted a cheap breather filter on the threaded end.. perfect fit
4) I wired an aux. output from the stinger to the solenoid, the other wire went to a +12v source (you may want to use a relay, I think it will be fine for just a simple solenoid).
5) Made sure I had a SOLID TUNE (at idle at least)
6) I set the Stinger's aux. output as follows: (your settings may vary).
RPM activated relay control
-On above RPM - 50
-Off above RPM - 700
-On below RPM - 700
-Off below RPM - 50

You could also use temperature activated relay control, but I figured this way if the car tries to stall on me, the valve will also help to prevent that..

Hope this helps some of you guys.

Yes, it works. I'll have to take a video. It's pretty crude, how it's setup.. but it gets the job done and the car finally cold-starts like it did on the stock ECU :).

I can see it now........ The Driftmotion/Hottscennessy Stinger VSV KIT!!!!!!! (really you should do that)

You are the MAN!!!! Thanks for being an inovator and sharing the knowledge with others.

I come from a land down under
Early to mid 80's Fords here used a simple Solenoid IC valve.

The early ones have 2x 5/8 barbs the later ones are flange mounts, I used both types with my old Wolf ECU.

I was about to steal the flanged one from my '88 F-150 a few days ago, but I couldn't find a good way to connect hoses to the flange ;)

You're a genius and youre not that far from me. Probably only sixteen hours or so. Can you be here tomorrow to hook one up for me? I'll pay you eight dollars an hour, and let you have your way with my cousins wife.

LOL @ Jay

Thanks Mark

I changed the aux settings some: I think this will work better. I'll let everyone know what works best for mine.

RPM activated relay control
UP
-On above RPM - 300
-Off above RPM - 1100
Down
-On below RPM - 750
-Off below RPM - 350

Mark is closer Scott, so I guess he'll have his way with my cousing wife. Dont' forget to call me with the stuff I need Mark. I need to start this as soon as you get yours running. Thanks.

Remind me again? Are you talking about timing settings or this valve?

A local place here makes a simple flange that the Valve bolts to and you screw a couple of barbs into. ;)

you are god:love: ive been looking for a vsv type kit or somthing for the past month. just wondering how cold is it in va when u start the car and if u can go a little more in depth on what auxiliary mode you chose and what realay you used and if you can make a diagram of some type. sry im semi retarded without a diagram. but is there any better valve i can use? because it takes me a good minute of cranking and throttling to get car to start and then manually idle for 5 minutes. its a pain!!! i appreciate it. by the way its like 20 degrees outside:cry:

Thats a good idea, I may have to pester you for a number/email sometime, whenever I get motivated to try something different.

I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test it, but thus far it's a HUGE improvement. As for my car, I can crank it and go. So far the coldest it's been around here was about 30*F and I was able to crank the car and drive away in under 30 seconds time. Much better than the 4+ minutes I would spend before. Of course because this valve doesn't flow a huge amount of air, at that temperature the idle was only about 700RPMs, but much better than 400RPM's.

For your car you sound like you may need a larger valve for the colder temperature.

about the relay, I didn't use one. Thats just me. You may want to use a relay.

The auxiliary is a feature built into standalone ECU's that allows them to control another device based on programmable parameters.

so there is basically a relay built into the ems? or its not needed and the ems will adjust? what should i look for when im looking for a vsv? can u find one that will flow a little better? im sry for asking so many questions it just seems like you know what to do and i want to start my car and drive not wait 5 minutes or so. thank you again

Cool deal! I actually already sent Jay a similar 12v solenoid valve about a month ago, but he never posted how the install went! I had shipped the same one to Mark a month before that and it got rejected and sent back! :(
LOL But that one you found is less expensive and looks better too, good job on that!!! We tried a Ford ISC and did get it to work well, but it took a lot of messing with the map to get it to be stable in all situations, so the fast idle valve is the easy, inexpensive and reliable way to do it. I am going to order a few of those myself. Thanks!
