idle problem. cant figure this out.

Ok so I checked for codes don't have any. My car will start butidles like a 350 on steroids, if I hit the gas and hold it, it will miss but if I Rev it it wont miss until it idles. After it starts to warm up it gets better I can hold down the gas and it runs fine but idles high then low etc.. then after a bit it starts to come down on idle to where it should be but still misses but not near as bad. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I checked the cps and tps and afm all seem to be fine. Could it be cause there is no air filter at the moment and no exhaust past the turbo elbow? Eh I'm just stumped. All the vaccim lines are new and hooked up right and I cant hear any leaks hissing or feel any, I even used carbon cleaner around the gaskets to see if there was a leak none found. Also I am running autolites and the miss is not slight it very noticeable.

There is no reason you should have an exhaust sounding like a 350 if there are stock cams in there.

Plug gaps? I use NGK BKR7E and gap them.

Plug wires you are using?

Igniter ground mod?

So it runs bad when cold, and after it warms, and clearances are taken up it runs better? Yes?

checked your isc valve? +1 on plugs/wires as well.

I'll double check my plug gap and just get another new set of wires, any that would be recomended? What is the isc valve? Oh and when in diagnostic mode the check engine light just blinks consitantly.

I've no doubt there's a crap load of stuff wrong with your car but for a start you should put an air filter on it...

ISC idle speed control.


Means you have no error codes stored.

Yes I understand it needs an airfilter, and will have this Friday. I got the car back in pieces with no head any sensors, afm was gone etc..
But Friday I will have an airfilter and transmission lines done.

I know it sounds like I don't know jack but I do know a lot but there is always something else to learn, I have been trying to figure this out for the last two weeks by myself and am just stumped. So my thought is to gather some clues on what could it be and go from there if I don't do it my self and take it to a mechanic then I failed and didn't try or work hard enough on it.

So tomorrow I will chafing my gap and wires, and research the isc.

Oh and jetjock the way you teach is a good way to learn. I like how you drop hints here and there just like my friend who is retried from the airforce, he taught me how to build motors and we restored my first car together it was 62 mercury meteor two door with s 221 v8 loved that car.

Wow that would be great I am sure I will have it figured out but right now I don't know yet. We'll see what happens tomorrow and over the next month with it. I have an expedition that we use for a dd. If there is anything I've learner its patience lop.

So I may have figured this our but I'm not sure. So I have a Lexus maf and think that because it Lets in extra air which I think could be the reason for the surging idle maybe any thoughts?

I reset the tps with no differance maybe its bad or somthing.

You are filming the wrong side of the engine bay. The fan is blowing air all over your intake area. That makes for the eratic readings. I don't know what else is wrong yet. " A crap load wrong". It is hard to tell, but it looks dark on the left side of the 3000 pipe at the clamp. Dark would indicate space. But it is hard to tell from the video.

Okay, I put an airfilter on it friday and it is idleing better. Still is missing though. I have another set of coils and I'm ordering new wires for it next friday. I hope this clears it up. I will keep you posted.

Ok here is an update. It still has a bad idle when cold it warms up and still does the surging but ot as bad. Now if you drive it before it stras to warm up it stumbles real bad and you have to feather the throttle. at a certain point it runs like its a brand new car (this is just before the thermostate opens), then it runs fine while driving but if you stop it surges and what not. Then if you shut it off and turn it on after a minute it surges bad till it catches up. I have to say that its confusing, I waited to ppost until I had the exhaust and airfilter to see if it helps but it still does it lol. Any help would be apreciated thanks.
