I say do what you like since its your car. I have personally had side exit exhaust and i hated it. WAY too loud, and I didnt really dig the look. Also have you looked under your car. The frame rail sits pretty low so what ever pipe you run under it isnt going to have much ground clearance. Just a couple of things to think about.

Here's a bit of experience with exhausting anywhere but Behind you. A friend of mine bought a 69 Firebird in 75. He told me he wanted his mufflers to dump down just before his rear end. I told him if he did that the exhaust would eat away the underside of his car. All these years later there it sits in his garage due to the trunk and entire rear underside of his car is now eaten away, including a huge hole in his truck. His car would need a complete sheetmetal reconstruction of the rear end from the corrosion the exhaust caused. On the sidepipe idea, it's bad one, even the mopars that came with sidepipes were and are known for the exhaust eating away at the sheetmetal as the fumes are sucked underneath the car. Your tires will also quickly rot away from the exhaust fumes. These are GREAT reason's why almost all cars have rear exit exhausts, just my opinion though.

The only problem I have with this idea is you'll end up with a big void next to the gas tank, might look goofy.

One of these under the car...................

Then one of these............

and perhaps something like this in front of each rear tire, one on each side, or both on one side, slash cut at an angle of course...................

One thing to take into account is that I think I heard that some track associations dont let you run unless the exhaust exits behind the door and past the window. I never really looked into it but its something to keep in mind if you plan on tracking it.

What in the hell where they planning on doing with the exhaust after the down pipe?!
On a side note: If you put the exhaust on the side of your car you may want to try and blend it in with the side skirts like on a rousch mustang.

blending it in with the rockers wouldn't look bad, but I don't think our rockers are long enough to do it--that and you'll melt the plastic with the tip if you don't put an insert into the hole where the exhaust pipe is coming through. CF works well to gaurd against plastic melt :D
