This shouldn't be such a big deal. The key for my Supra was worn to shit, so I gave my local toyota dealership my VIN & proof of ownership. $20 later I had three brand new keys.

Don't switch locks, don't shoot your door, don't take apart your glovebox.

I think you missed the parts where Toyota doesn't keep VIN records of key codes for more than XX years (I've heard a couple different numbers, but it's around 15).

At any rate I'd much rather rebuild my lock cylinders anyway to prevent someone else's key from working in my car.

The first time I went to a Toyota dealership with my 1991 Corolla asking for a key, they told me their records went back only 10 years. A few weeks later, I called them asking for keys for my 1990 Supra, they did it with no hesitation. I think it depends on what employee you're talking to at the time.

I'm sure there's a limit. The problem is that quite often the majority of employees have no idea what it really is.

It's all rather academic though. Reign's lock set doesn't match anyway and he'd like it to. in which case you can either buy a complete new set from Toyota (I don't believe they'll order one for your existing key code), or rebuild all the locks (which on 15-20 y/o locks is a GREAT idea).

dude go to your local car auctions, lots of those cars sell without keys,

we have local junkyard auctions and theres this weird old guy that shows up that everyone calls the "key gypsie" for $10 bucks he'll bust out the ignitions and a blank and just start filing away. within 10 minutes a good smith can make you a new one.

and about cutting a new key from the vin, i just did an 89 pickup at the dealer a few months back when my mom left the key in a poket and sent it through the dryer melting the top off.

Lots of strange suggestions in here.. lol

Easy way to get a key from your local Toyota Dealer. Remove the passenger side door lock cylinder (very easy to get to).. There is a number on the side of it, that is your key code and any Toyota dealer can cut you a new key.

Damn, talk about misinformation central... This crap always kills me.

1st, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TOYOTA MASTER KEY!!! Most automotive locks use blades (flat pieces of metal of varying size with a rectangular hole in them) there is no place for stacking as there is with cylindrical tumblers!

:bsflag:
BULLSHIT my bother haves them i saw him walk up to a couple supras in the junk yards lock unlock them no problem same with my car! there is 3 keys that will open any MKIII dont believe me if you live by me i can go there and move your car by unlocking it & driving it for you!

have many friends with supras? Invite them all over. There are very few key variations. At 2k6 Matt (gottoyota?) locked his keys in his car, we were all in the hotel parking lot, got some mk3 people gathered up and had it unlocked by like the 5th person.

Hahahaha, it was the key to my 87' that opened his car. I no longer have that car, but that key now opens a different 87' running around clearwater.

And Jake, the glove box isn't key specific I believe. Any Supra key should open it.

I was looking at the center section of the 89+ tails, and I dont know if its possible to use the key lock back there... I dunno, maybe mine is just messed up, but people who have swapped 89+ tails on to a pre89, are you able to unlock your hatch with the key? It looks like someone just epoxied the mechanism to the back... But it looks like there is suppose to be some kind of something or other that goes through the metal and into the hatch compartment... But the pre89s dont have a hole where that thing would go through... Am I right about this?

Thanks for the offers guys, and the advice... Bowser, I have other supra keys, so I might try that...

Sorry bud, trust me I know plenty of locksmiths (myself included, up until few years ago). There's a BIG fuckin' difference between using a key with averaged cuts on locks that are worn beyond spec and a master key. I've used both, I know the differences in how the keys are cut, how the cylinders are designed and WHY and WHEN they'll work. Just because sometimes averaged and/or rake cut keys are master keys... they aren't not by a long shot.

I serously don't get you people half the time... something goes wrong and develops a little slop and everyone's screaming to get it fixed right. EXCEPT for the minute it's something to do with the security of the car.

I'm done with this thread.

^^^^ No reason to get bent..
There is 3 keys that will open any supra.
It is the same way with honda its no big deal.
You maybe right about there being blades and crap and no second master key tumbler set but i guarantee i can get ine a supra with 3 keys..

It got so bad i changed my all my key sets to another US spec supra thinking my brother had a copy of my key it did not stop him later he showed me the keys, how he was getting into my supra, and then we went to a junk yard and got into every supra locked it, unlocked it both on the doors and the ignition..

I did find an exception to any master key set up well that you can find easy in the US. My new ignition lock set came off my JDM supra!!! I dont know if the cylinder is after market but my friend that works toyota irvine offered to make me a free copy of my key and non of the US toyota keys match up at all... pics below..

I dont know if any one have ever confirmed this but my theory is that the JDM ignition cylinders have a one of a kind toyota key track!

To stop your mkiii from being joy ridden by your bro with master keys or to stop your supra from being car jacked with master keys by a stranger this seems to be the way to go!

If you want i can ask my brother to take a high resolution picture of the 3 keys and post them on here then you can probably make a set and get into any supra you want but my life maybe in danger wide spreading it

I am sure people on here as it is are upset there is such keys that few know about.

Don't feel bad.. Half of my key is broken off inside the ignition. I had to go to Toyota and have a new key cut so I could open the doors.. now I have two keys to operate my car... a half key and a door/hatch key!

Thanks, but like I was sayin, I dont have the original ignition cylinder... Years and years ago, someone tried to steal the car when it was in New York, and they busted up the ignition column and it had to be replaced... Im sure I'll find the key, its somewhere around here...
