Around where I am there really are very few decent imports but there are a TON of ricers. More often than not, if I find anyone worth chatting with, they're in a domestic, and usually a camaro/firebird or a mustang. I've had more fun tearing up the streets with the domestic guys than I ever would with the local import (read: ricer) crowd. It's kind of a shame that the domestic guys know what they're looking at when they see a MkIII and the import guys are clueless.

Reminds me of this one time I was driving around with a friend of mine and a white integra pulled up next to us and started revving. I looked over and in the passenger seat was a girl I dated back in highschool for like a month. Her fiance/husband, who I also went to school with, was driving. Neither of them seemed to recognize me, so after I stopped laughing I showed them the difference between import and rice. Good times!

yea, i definately know what you mean. around where i live, i dont bother with the import crowd.

all my friends have bmw's, so most of the meets and cruises i attend are bimmer meets, however a few of my friends have nice "ricers," a swapped civic, gsx, stuff like that.

Well, since I engaged this thread in the first place... I'll toss in another comment:

Personally, my "Modus Operani" is SLEEPER, SLEEPER, SLEEPER! i.e.: Wolf in Sheep's clothing, without exception.

I WANT to look as "stock" as possible... and attract MINIMUM ATTENTION other than "nice clean OLD car" from a few onlookers. Some don't even KNOW that it's 20 years old! Okay with me...

I don't "cruise around" town... and DEFINITELY don't "stop and entertain" the occasional "ricer" (not ALL "ricers"... but mostly so...) in the Mall Parking lot, etc... it's just not important to me to impress ANYBODY. I do what I do with/to my car for my own pleasure and therapy. The "overkill" aspects of the cars "trimmings" under the hood and inside are for TWO PURPOSES: Performance and Pleasure. (The PLEASURE aspect is every bit anecdotal as anything else... a little colorful light comedy just adds to my OWN perception of the "technical gadgetry" aspect that epitomizes how these cars work as an integration of feedback systems and opportunity for control and manipulation of them by the operator... er... PILOT!:biglaugh:

My occasional highway "burst" next to the typical muscle car or performance sport car, is about the limit of my "exhibition" related behavior. The rest is just "hob-nobbing around" with other car guys, and YES, usually "OLD SKOOL" muscle car domestic crowd... read: MATURE car guys. (NOT that all "ricer" or "IMPORT SCENE" guys are IMMATURE... mind you... take many of THIS crowd for example... also QUALITY car guys and gals!;)

For me, it's all about "consistency" with both Philosophy and Execution in practice. Something more principled than JUST my car-related endeavors, but an inherent extension of my personal approach to EVERYTHING I do in life, both in work and at play.

Having said all that, I still think any and every opportunity to project the PHILOSOPHICAL and MANIFEST endeavors of my thinking and efforts is worthy of exchange with ANY other car enthusiast, be it RICER or VETERAN wrench alike. We ALL have a responsibility to further the cause of our pursuits in whatever constructive way we find ourselves opportunity to engage.

In short, we are ALL either MENTORS or STUDENTS... and mostly a bit of BOTH in what we do in here and on the outside.

Crisp, is that a compliment I found hidden in there? I didn't realize you cared!!! :biglaugh:

But you bring up few good points, and overall, I agree. Especially the part about the car and the mods there for your own personal experience. I couldn't agree more. My car is mine, and is the way it is because that's how I want it. Well, not the broken part, but the rest of it is. I don't show it off to gain the approval of others, I go out and run around like a bat out of hell because I love it. The rush that I get from coming out of a corner sideways or feeling the boost slam me back in my seat is the best drug I've ever found. I love the drive, more than anything else. Except maybe women.

I just get aggravated by people who are so full of themselves that they feel they have to challenge you to prove their own dominance. When some punk kid rolls up to me and asks for an ass-kicking, I just feel obligated to give it to them. I don't race for money. I don't race for girls, or for "respect" any of that other Hollywood bullshit. I race for the feeling. One of the best races I've ever had, I lost. I lost bad. But I had a blast and got a chance to shoot the shit with the other guy afterwards. That's what it's all about.

Just a few weeks ago "Is that your car out there? Is that like... a Toyota Mustang?"

I went into Advance Auto last month to get oil for my truck (15qts so I buy in gallons)
the ricer who works there, has a Matrix 6spd, STi hood scoop, body kit, 19's thousands of neons...
Comes up trying to help me, I go "Do you have another gallon of Rotella?"
"No that's all we have for the 4 quart gallons, places like wal-mart carry the 5 quart gallons, it's pretty popular"
"Really, I didn't know Wal-mart had their own measurements for fluids"

So I was talking to my buddy, Wolf, and he insisted I tell the story of his favorite race...

He was going down a local highway that is the popular local place to drag, on his modified Katana 600 when he pulled up to a red Isuzu Amigo. The next thing he knows, the amigo is revving and the driver is yelling at him and trying to get him to go for it at the light. He figures he'd have some fun and nods to the guy. Light turns green and the amigo does a 4-wheel burnout, tearing the painted arrow (that indicates straight or turn) off the pavement under him. Wolf's laughing so hard be blows the launch and LOOSES to a 2.4l amigo. Mind you his bike is faster than my supra.

Now the kicker: the guy in the amigo was me. We were both coming home from work and I decided I was bored. Now, I really hate that car, but it made just enough torque to do some really stupid things in 4wd. We still laugh about how I literally tore up the road in my POS winter beater.

EDIT: Once he did manage to launch, he ran the entire race in second gear, making as much noise as possible. We laughed. Hard.

First point: Every word out of crisp's mouth (...er... conveyed in electronic ink?) is a compliment to someone or other, in this case YES, YOU!;)

(Okay... so SOME of those compliments are veiled in sarcasm or rolling with satire... but if misconstrued, entirely without malice.;)

Second point: That's my inherent weakness... I care about everyone.:biglaugh:

I love driving slow, having ricers drive next to me, trying to insunuate (sp?) a race..

I know how to shift it without the BOV going off, so I slow down, downshift it to 2nd, around 3500 rpms, crusing, out of nowhere I step on it, build up boost instantly and run it to around 6200 rpms, shift into 3rd and wait for them to catch up...

after that they usually catch up and gawk, I just smile and shift to 4th and keep on scooting...

I find it more fun when they try to pull a ricer flyby and downshifting and stopping them right beside me and then walking on them a bit and letting off :D

For all the probe and camaro talk. Try driving a x8 Cressida. I have had mechanics of 20-30 years tell me that they can't put fluid into my diff because it's inside the transmission, even when I say "Can you top off the REAR diff?". Had oil-change guys flat out tell me that I'm FWD AFTER being under the car. LOTS of people think my car is a camry even though with stock suspension I'm about an inch higher in the rear than the front.

I get people ALL the time trying to jump the gun on me at lights, don't get many revver's though (must be because it's a camry). Have only had 2 or 3 good races in my Cressida, and most of those were people trying to pass me on the right. If I'm in one of my 86's, then I get alot of people revving on me and trying to get me to "Drift it!", if I'm in a good mood I can whip the rear a little, but generally I just turn up the stereo and keep driving.

I watch the F&F movies and try to identify the cars in the background. I think I've spotted about 6 AE86s in the first one, 4-5 in the 2nd and over a dozen in the 3rd. There's supposed to be an AE86 vs XR4Ti/RS200 convert in the new one that I'm curious to see which they let win, since any 86 owner knows that they don't drag very well without alot of work and generally something other than a 4A.

It seems when ever some I drive my car all the idiots come out. I have people in Mini vans try and race me. I just drive like any one else nice and slow, it really pisses some people off.

I was at a light a couple years ago and a guy in a civic pulled up next to me. he proceeded to rev to the limiter a few times. So I gave him a bit of 2 step and a fire ball, the kid looked like he had just shit his pants. I just drove off when the light changed and he was still there lol.
