Actually if he just made contact between the battery cable at the starter and the body, there is no reason why any other circuit in the car would be affected, there is nothing in line between those two points. Am I wrong here?

but yeah, I think weve all done stoopid sheit like that, I sometimes use the flat surface on the top of my battery to put a wrench down...I know its a bad idea but sometimes I just cant help myself.

That's what I did, essentially... shorted the positive terminal to the alternator casing. I can't remember exactly what blew - rectifier plate?
