Well as I was putting my new starter on, with the battery cables connected, I touched to wrench to the positive and negative. It jolted the crap out of me!

Missing patch of hair FTL

Here's your sign??

Good job. Always disconnect the battery when working on electrical stuff. Or at least when working on things that draw a lot of current.

I was caught up in getting it done before the dyno and track. Here's how my friend told the story

Well Matt was under the Supra and I heard the wrench hitting some metal (small workspace). I heard him get all silent, then it sounded like a toaster exploding and his feet jerking. 5 seconds later, he said, which I will never forget.. "I think my battery's good!"

Well, the battery may still be good, but you'd better get your alternator checked. This will often toast some electronics in there.

usually pops the 100 amp fuse under the hood...

if you're lucky and didn't take out anything else...

Actually if he just made contact between the battery cable at the starter and the body, there is no reason why any other circuit in the car would be affected, there is nothing in line between those two points. Am I wrong here?

but yeah, I think weve all done stoopid sheit like that, I sometimes use the flat surface on the top of my battery to put a wrench down...I know its a bad idea but sometimes I just cant help myself.

Heheh. You're not a real mechanic until you've done some incredibly stupid things.

I've been shocked by the alternator, been shocked by grabbing a plug wire while the engine was running, etc etc. DUmb shit like that. I have far less stupid accidents now that I know a bit better, LOL

Yikes! Sounds like you wanted to be in the running for a Darwin Award!

Just kidding... glad you're okay and came away with nothing more than a smooth spot and a jolt.

It's the redneck way to see if your battery has juice

Alternators good, knowing it was removed the time I got toasted..

Anybody here deal with electronics? If so, you might know how burnt FET's smell. My arm STILL smells like that.
