did you do anything to the PS, AC, water pump, or alternator? could it be one of those froze up causing the belt to squeal or maybe one is going bad and squealing internally?

i did not re install the ac belt everything else is there. its really hard to pin point where its coming from, the noise is so high pitched. the engine doesn't stay on for more than 3-5 seconds and i noticed when the engine dies out, there is a puff off smoke in the front of the engine. what would cause a puff of smoke in the front of the engine?

my guess is a blown bearing in the timeing belt tensioneror oil pump drive shaft....which would make that sound and would heat up really damn hot....how does the timeing belt look and smell? Smell all the belts cause if one gets hot the belt will stink of burnt rubber....as soon as the car shuts off I would start feeling all the pulleys, when my skin burns and sticks to something then that would be where I would start looking...when in doubt, burn yourself.

hahaha!!! thats what happened to mw when i was on a steam ship. i have scars on my forearms as war wounds. well, right now its going to be hard to determine the smell because of the f'ing cold, can't smell, taste and for some odd reason, i can't hear...WTF!!!! one other question.....that howling sound, can it be a vaccuum leak too? thanks guys for the input....i will try to burn my self later, i have no feelings from my middle finger to the pinky due to steam burns......guess i'll have someone help me...:sarcasm: thanks again..

its hard to put a timing gun to it if it can't stay on for no more than 5 seconds. i set the cams match mark from the cams to the match mark on the #2 timing cover and the match mark on the crank pulley to zero. i verified that #1 cylinder head and the #6 were Top dead center. i will check the timing belt tension pulley and verify the belts if they are warm and hot, this weekend. please play to the Supra GOD's for me.

a blown bearing will get hot almost instantly unless it's a bearing that gets fresh oil....

i have a finger without feeling..use the back of your hand.. hover it over whatever.. because the back of the hand isnt used as much as the bottom, it's relatively sensitve to heat and or cold.

and about the howling..theres really nothing i can suggest accept the obvious which has been stated already. ive NEVER heard a mk3 howl like that though..

nah i meant your valve timing not your ignition, 'pray' i will hope for you man. did you line everything up before you took the timing belt off?? \/\/thats next

viper would it cause it not to run though? and is it coincidence that it happened the same time he did his head gasket? not trying to cut your theory down just never heard a sound like that.

Odd... if it was something siezed it would make the noise while cranking. Or at least it should.

Difficult to say over the internet...

I was thinking the exact same thing. could this be an issue with the starter somehow?

I mean, the starter spins to crank the engine and the engine sounds normal when he is cranking it. But once the engine kicks on and the starter stops, that's when the noise starts. plus, how would anything mechanical in an engine ever make a noise like that???

I know that's kinda far out there, but what else could be causing this when the engine sounds fine when it's cranking?

i dont know what it sounds like if/when this happens, but I agree with bad starter.

how does the starter engage the flywheel? Can the release go bad and keep the starter engaged?

it would be nice if you could have someone else crank it or at least have someone listen and pinpoint where it's coming from.

All I can say is it sounds pretty damn funny, and that it sounds like meshing gears. Like salomon said it would explain why it sounds 'normal' when starting and like an exotic bird as it flutters to a halt.
