Do you realize you quoted a post from more than a year ago? Furthermore, did you realize the particular post you quoted is so far up the list of recent posts we can't see where the hell it's coming from? Haha.

Or you could simply go back in the thread and look if it bothers you that much. Or is the 3 calories you burn clicking the mouse not in your daily workout schedule? :p

Adding this up leads to stupid decisions - like selling your car, for instance. Never add up the cost of your hobbies.

Well said, I stopped counting after I spent my first thousand.

However, I do know that it will take about $15,000 to finish it. :nono:

You would think if the car is insured as a collectible then you would get what you put into it

You get what it is appraised at (they take into account money put in) + 1500.00 for parts on top. However, the appraised value of a vehicle generally decreases in proportion to what is put into it as the total raises. Face it.. you can put 70,000 into a MK3 easily if your going for quarter mile times... however, the car isn't going to appraise out at more than 25-30,000 simply due to reality. So.. once you peak the appraisal value.. everything put into it afterwards is a bit of a risk when it comes to recouping your input.

That said... you can go buy a car for 35,000.00 today and drive it for 7-10 years and its going to be worth what a normal beat up Supra is worth today after 20'ish years. And I only pay 7.00 per month for insurance (full insurance).
After 5 years, my total insurance cost for my car is 420.00. Thats about 3-4 months for a new car.

on all combined... shoot it's gotta be up near $20k if I had to guess I'd say about 18... I really don't want to think about it though... it's rather depressing since most of that work/money was simply stolen

About $65,000 for its lifetime. And 5 motors

$34,000 since august on one build that had to be done twice

Holy hell.

I've probably got 17 into mine. Not to mention I had to buy another car and sacrifice it to save mine.

I imagine this thread was geared more toward modification and improvement cost than regular maintenance, upkeep and repairs, but i bought my 86.5 in 1991 for 8k.
It was my only vehicle for 8.5 years and I put about 24k miles a year on it. I paid the dealership for 3 sets of brake pads, paid a mechanic for a valve cover replacement, a clutch and the drive shaft bearing. Also paid Toyota a new radiator. Besides those things there were 2 sets of tires, light bulbs oil changes and gas. There was never a repair done to the car that required I leave it overnight. Total cost for repairs was about 900 bucks. After that time I sold it to my boss who rebuilt the motor and then killed the transmission. I traded a leaf blower for the title and got it back. I picked up a new W 58 and have it installed. Grand total for all repairs since 1991 is less than 3000 dollars.

What was the car priced at in 86.5 22k?

Seems like a big drop to 8k by 91

It was actually 9k, fat fingers + cell phone... It was a leather TEMS 5speed, probably stickered 24ish.
I traded a free and clear 1984 tbird for 2500 and financed 6500 for a $121 a month payment which was the world when I was 21. I thumbed through the auto trader that morning looking at dozens of 87's and found the 86.5 at a second tier dealer. It had close to 70,000 miles at the time which was twice what most Supras had and was subsequently pretty cheap compared to the rest that were out there, though not outrageously so. The MK4 never really hit that depreciation mark. They just weren't around long enough to be replaced.

Really? Was that the one that sat in a toyota dealership in Calgary?
If I won the lottery I would have bought it lol

I think he is talking about when they were new cars. That one in the dealership is amazing, it should definitely be kept like that.
