How much do you boost in 1st gear?

I have the Apexi AVC-R electronic boost controller. I really love the way it holds, but I'm not sure I understand all it will do. I noticed while I was at the track sunday that I don't build any boost in first gear. I"m thinking that this could mean the difference in a 12.1 and an 11.99 so I'm just wondering how much boost you guys make in first gear. I make 17.5 in every other gear, but zero in first. Is this normal?

Anyone with the AVC-R want to help me set it up differently, feel free to chime in. Thanks.

I made two passes sunday and they were 8.56 and 7.998. The MPH wasn't reading so I don't know how fast I was going. These were my first two passes on my MT ET streets. The first pass was with 36psi and the second was with 24psi. I may drop the pressure down a bit more for the next trip, but I was just wanting to make a few passes and get used to them. They grip so much better than the Nitto's. Thanks, Jay


I have video of it, but my new JVC Everio camera doesnt' want to let me download it onto my computer. If anyone has any knowledge about this, I'm willing to listen about it as well.

iirc you dont build boost in first gear or neutral because the turbo spools under load and their is not enough load in neutral or first gear to create boost

That's kinda what I was thinking, but I wanted to make sure some of you guys weren't building like five or six psi in first. If this is normal then I'm o.k. with it. I just wanted to ask to make sure that I wasn't having a problem with my boost controller.

Thats me, i can get 5 or 6 pounds, but its totally useless on street tires.Tires just go up in smoke. Also my turbo is much smaller than yours, i can free rev in neutral and make 1 or 2 pounds. You sir need some form of antilag/two step so u can build boost at launch

I get about 6lbs in first. Na-T, 57ct26, yada,yada,yada. I guess its just the nature of the beast...Crazy you don't make any at all, what gears your running in the rear?

now i can agree with you, i can get about 6 to 8 psi of boost.

Man, I get about 15lbs in first, but I have a 7M and a smaller turbo. I love my ET streets, You need to lower the pressure to about 17lbs in the size that you have. I run 15-17 in my 275/50/15's. The second time seems like you had a much better launch. What was your 60' time? So you didn't get slips? probably because their traps weren't working properly.

I'll check my old logs, but im sure I got full 17 psi in 1st gear. It didn't hit till like 6000 rpms though (my t67 1jz with 264s).

its your boost controller. Set boostcut in the ems (if it has it) or racegas into the car and play with the start duty settings. Add like 20% in first gear to start and keep adding it till you get the desired boost wanted in first.

Maybe I shouldn't help the competition for texas.......

Thanks Aaron. A two step or anti/lag would be awesome, but I don't mind running slow times. I want to run as good as I can of course, but my best may be a 12.xx at Texas. We'll see in March I guess.

3.73 gears with a pt67dbb turbo on a 1.5jz.

15?........that's insane. I will definately lower my tire pressure down the next time I go. I hope to make about five or six more passes before the Texas meet. I get a little better at launching with each attempt. My slip looks like this.

When I ran the 12.5 in the quarter, my 1/8 was a 8.364 @ 90.16 mph, so I may have been going a little bit faster this time. Maybe about 92mph. I'm hoping to get into the 11.xx somehow in Texas, but all I can do is run it as hard as I can.

Yeah, I drove the it to the track on these tires and I made the first pass just like they were. When I got back from the run, I checked them and they were at 36psi. I lowered them to 24psi and made one more pass. I didn't want to lower them anymore because I was driving to the golf course once I left and didn't want them on 20psi.

I think if I can get six to eight psi in first, that's going to get my mph up quicker and It'll make the turbo spool a little quicker in second. I'll play with it a bit more this weekend at the track again.................oops, no I won't. I"m going to Orlando this weekend to play Bay Hill and Tiger's course.........woooot!!!!!!!

Thanks Justin. I don't have mine set up for individual gears though. There is still a lot about the avcr I don't know yet. I"ve read it all once or twice, but it looks like I need to read it again for a crash course. I have my boost cut set @ 22psi. I'm running the meth injection, but I'm also only running 17.5-18 psi.

With boost cut dont worry, just keep cranking the duty up (in Start Duty) till you reach your desired boost level. Remember thought with the lower load in 1st itll take longer to spool (6k range) and Rev 1st gear out. Your engine is built so I would run 1st to 8k.
