How does the 7m oil cooler work on the 1jz?

Ok...I'm a bit anal and got to really looking at this sandwich plate ;)

I dropped the Mocal sandwich adapter in a pot of water and heated it up. The thermostat started closing at 65 deg C...it was fully closed at 80 deg C. Looking closer at the design of this thing, it allows oil through to the cooler at all times...the thermostat does regulate the flow, but in a rather "loose" fashion based on resistance to flow between the cooler and filter. There is no way it's flow is as accurate as I would like for a performance motor.

I think a better option for you guys is to use the Mocal in-line thermostat (Part # MOC8AN at the link in post #13). Since it is in the feed/return line to the cooler, it will regulate flow specifically to the cooler. You will need a standard sandwich plate for the filter head.

it will still flow through the in line thermostat it just wont flow that much to the cooler... just like it did in your sandwich plate.

i would opt for an oil relocation as well to save a headache in the long run... (the oil filter was a PITA for me in the mkiv... worse than the mkiii is for me now heh)

The in-line thermostat will just return oil flow back to the filter head until it heats up. The thermostat closes and oil flows to the cooler.

The difference in the sandwich plate is the thermostat closes a hole between the two flat sides. The oulet/inlet to the cooler is unrestricted. It's counting on the oil to take the least path of resistance...that's why I don't think it will be very accurate.

I got this one to install on a R22 in my toyota truck...that will be fine. In a high performance turbo motor, I'd go with the in-line thermostat.

So, where does the watercooled plate that the jz engines have fit in? I mean the metal piece in the picture where the filter is mounted to. Do we delete this?

(For the record, I normally run Apexi or TRD filters like Youp said, didn't know the Fram filters were that bad though, never will use it again. And yes, the pic was taken with the manifold off.)

Wouldn't it heat up the oil again before entering the engine?

Maybe I don't get it, but what is the stock flow order of the oil?

1 oil pump - watercooled plate - filter - engine
2 oil pump - filter - watercooled plate - engine

it will, but will be fine, coolant temp is around 180-190*f where you want your oil to be

Yeah you're right, didn't think of that, but do you know which one is the flow order? I'd say it's #2, but I'm not sure, don't know how it all flows internally.
