30 hours manual machining/design, locally would be easily $50+/hr, plus material, heat treating, etc... if they paid less than $2k, they got a deal.

Very true. My machine shop charges a minimum $100 per hour on some machines and more on others. Then you have set-up time, and the material etc..as you mentioned.

I thought about making a girdle out of 4340 steel that incorperated the main caps as one giant piece of steel. Just sounded like too much work. I won't say what the price was, if anyone needs one, we can talk about a girdle that will work for your set up. Prices will vary greatly depending on the material it is made from, size of the girdle, and how finished you want it to be. Thinking about water jetting the next one.
