Just wondering if anyone has the dimensions for 87 7M motor mounts... I need them, bad... Today, Im so bummed... We set the motor in, and the mounts are TOO long, so the engine wont sit in the cradle, so I had to pull it out, and Im having the mounts machined down, but I need to know how much to take off... Right now they are 3 1/8" and are so long that the base of the mounts only rest at the tops of the frame mounts hitch...

Do you mean the "bolts" from end to end are 3.5"s? And the ACTUAL mount that sits between the motor brackets and the frame rail brackets are closer to 2"s? So I pretty much need to shave off about 1 1/4" off each?

See, I got these from Duane, and he has them on his car, but his 7M is an 89+, so Im thinking that maybe the 89+'s have different mounting brackets or something... I've never seen 89+ side by side with pre89s...

your car is pre-89? i didn't think it was...... why are you using post 89 mounts with a pre89 crossmember in the first place?

I made post 89 mounts for my buddy a while back and i cut them on a lathe to 3" even, and they worked great.

for my pre 89 mounts i took the stock mounts and welded strips of steel in the open area to make them solid, the rubber is still in them, there is just no gap anymore so they are essentially 1 peice.

yes, the later style are shorter, they're a lot like the old truck engine mounts i had on my 82 4x4...

the angles for the mounts are completely different as well, the early style go out to the sides more while the later are more verticle...

I'd look at my spare set of mounts, but they're out in storage :(

Boost: yes, my car is actually an 87... So a 3" mount wont work... I just need to know for sure the measurements of the 87s before I go shavin these down on a lathe...

Poodles, thanks for the info... Hey, where is storage? Is it near by? ;)

ummm that is the reson the 87 subframe is diffent then the 89 sub frame the pitch that the montes sit on will never sit flush

so even if some one gives you the sizes it will be wroung

so go buy some 86 to 88 and weld/ box them then you be good as gold and sell the ones you have

^^^^ For sure.... easiest alternative is to go hit up a junk yard or buy some from someone on here cheap... if you can't weld them yourself, I doubt a shop would charge you more than 10$.

Solids =

Do any of the guys that run solids run a solid trans mount as well?

K IJ, lets hear it.... why do you hate solids like you hate everything else?:) I agree with the DS but i like my mounts, also are you saying if you have solid motor mounts you need a solid tranny mount as well?

I come from a land down under
BA: Cos they're STUPID ;)

Early Mk3 mounts are pretty good and take a HUGE amount of power before they tear off and a simple Tq strap would solve that issue 100% without the vibration and harshness of solids.

Running a rubber mount at the trans and solids at the front just doesn't make sense as you're turning the Motor/Trans into a huge lever that's flexing the Block/Mount/Subframe are of the car each time you get on it.....

Star: thanks for the link to Polo's car, but I didnt see any mounts on that page... ;)

IJ: where can I get a torque strap?Dont you really only need one, on the driver's side? *or is it the passenger side? Its been so long I cant remember which side the motor kicks over on, lol...

if you have the stock limiter on the passenger side it won't matter... or hell, you could just replace it with something like a chevy sway bar endlink...

also, as it tries to twist, the mounts are in a cup, so it just pushes on the sides of the cup, so no breakage!!

I agree with IJ on that, the pre-89 mounts are much better than the later style (though the later style isolates better)
