How are turbos voodoo science? The basic concept is VERY easy to understand. Your expelled exhaust gasses are spinng an impeller. Think of it as blowing into a pinwheel. Now picture that pinwheel being connected to another pinwheel (the inducer) by a shaft. The "fins" on this pinwheel are curved the opposite direction. Now, as that impeller gets spun faster and faster, it's also spinning the inducer, which is taking the incoming air (air intake) and forcing it down the throat of the intercooler.

See? Easy! :D

Cams are also not too hard. You've got lift, and you've got duration. The longer your valves are open (duration) the more air can come in and the more goes out. Your lift also has alot to do with what can come in and out. If you had a 272 cam that only opens 9mm, only so much can come in. But if you have a 272 cam that opens 9.3mm, you're getting more in/out.

272 is your duration in degrees, it's open for 272* of a full rotation, which is 360*, obviously.

Now, this also works in reverse. If you have a cam that's 280* 9.3 and a 272* 9.3, the 280* cam is going to allow more in/out than the 272* because it's open for longer.

My big "voodoo science" as you called it, is the actual valvetrain itself, softer spring, stiffer spring, oversized valves, etc...

Not quite... a 272* with 236* @ .050" will make more power than a 280* with 224* @ .050" ;)

We can simplify turbo operation to 'exhaust driven fan' - or we can get incredibly complicated. Same with camshafts.

The point is, though - the question posed by the original poster of this thread could have had the answer he/she desired within 20-30 seconds of searching.

As for the turbo I posted - how do you think they run those enormous props on the back of container ships? :D

Why can't you people just answer the damn, questions? Most people have a life and would perfer to spend it either working on their car, driving their car, or just plain having fun, not searching this fricken site all day. If I had the answers I would gladly share them, and when I learn this shit I will share what I know. Stop acting so damn snobby!

Really what it comes to, is just what you said... Most People have a life... for someone to sit and waste THEIR time... because someone else wants to enjoy THEIR life... that is not fair... for someone to work harder (finding the information for their first time) and then just tell people as they want.... yea it seems friendly, and for the first 100+ times it is cool, but when it is a question that obviously has been answered on this site before, then that is different, now if someone asks a question, well what is this weird gold smoke coming out of my headlight... that is not something that will be on the search option (at least I hope not). So, yea... in this world you spend 1 of 2 things to get what you want, or both... TIME... or MONEY.. you chose... Hell that is a great idea... pay the guys who know, for their info...

Merlyn: I've literally answered 1000's of questions in my time here over the years and am quite happy to continue to do so as long as the person asking has out a little thought and research into asking an intelligent question and NOT the gibberish asked in the thread.

Well, I understand that, as am I at times... but even in this case, and yes it comes down to the style of question.... it still gets annoying answering questions like this one...

it follows 2 rules I have learned

If you dont know the answer it is probably something you ought to not know and...

the more indepth a question you ask the more knowledge you will learn from it...

For 1, this supra is my first turbo car... yet, everything I have learned about Turbos so car is from my research...

It simply is like this...

I know a shit load about computers, and when people ask how to overclock, there is no way to answer that... you can tell them what it does.. but if you dont know HOW to overclock... or even how to start overclocking, you are going to blow something up... to answer his question, I can't, but if you were to answer the base question, he will blow his car up... because I imagine you can stick a rather large turbo on it... but without proper tuning, without proper cooling measures and without the proper equipment to back the turbo up, it won't do much good at all...

I guess my simple frustration is not at him, because I don't know him, nor know the answer, it is the people who get angry for questions not being answered... what, we are suppose to drop our lives to answer a question when this site has a feature on it that is very easy to use...

As you can see from my sig, i don't own a Daily Drive that is very commonly modified... so the knowledge is not as wide spread, nor is the car as old.. Hell some of our fathers were toying with these cars before some of us were born (anyone under 18 or so)... the knowledge is out there... and I am coming from car communities where the information is not as available as information for supras are... and I sure as hell know I did my research for my Maxima, and I cant for the life of me understand how people are not able to simply find information...

"GTE Turbo Options"

"Turbo Options"

"Turbo Upgrades"

"Turbo"

Just from reading, not even really searching, I know my first "new" Turbo will be an upgrade CT-26... (sure as hell HOPE I have the model # right of our Turbo), but at the same time, I know I have a lot to do before I even go that route...

I guess here is the answer to whoever started this thread.....

before you shoot for the sun, you might want to get the ship to take off....

My equation for any turbo upgrade from a new member with less than 100 posts:

Newbs turbo questions/answer: Search + 57trim = good enough for you, you can't handle more than that :)

You can run a size 153 trim ct-26 turbo, but make sure to get 7 inch intercooler piping, so as to not overpressure anything. Also, get 1600 cc injectors, and use 3 coil packs per cylinder, but you'll have to custom makes wires.

You make want to run 6 walbro pumps. They sell these as a kit at www.6walbropumps.com

get 3 inch fuel line, and dont forget stickers. stickers > anything.

7 inch triple exhaust helps too. Gotta let that size 153 turbo breath ya kno?
