I'm going to cam my Impala, Ive decided a good middle ground for what I'm looking for is a cam with a 236 degree duration at .050 for the intake. Now Cmop has a LOT of different cams with that choice, One being a 236/236 and others with higher durations for the exhaust valve.

The exhaust cam is generally a higher duration to scavenge something isn't it? Any opinions?

Stock auto and gears?

If so, 214/224, with ~.480 lift.

Exhaust side is usually longer duration, because stock exhaust ports suck.

If mild stall/3.42-3.73 range gears:
224/236 with ~.510 lift.

This is assuming you are using stock heads, stock compression, and headers with true dual 2.5" exhaust. Be sure your valve springs will allow the lift you want.

Personally, I'd go with a 214/224 .470-.490 lift, and run 1.6 roller rockers on it to bump things up around 216/226 .520ish lift.

214/224, seems a litttle mild... Maybe I'm not reading your numbers right

The impala is my DD, but a little camming wont kill anything. DD just = car to drive so I don't rack miles on the hard to fix car.

It is. You will have extremely little gains with a bigger cam, until you upgrade your heads.

Stocks heads + mild cam = massive lower rpm torque (good for a street car, ESPECIALLY one with freeway flyer gearing)

High flowing heads + big cam = massive upper rpm torque (good for a lower geared car, aka 3.73s+)

I agree 100% with doward...compression, stall, gears, and head flow are too small for that big of a cam....Take him up on his suggestion.

Heh... you have any ideas how many arguements I get into with people over cams? They get a cam that's way too big for the rest of the engine, enjoy the lumpity-lump, and can't understand why they get walked all over the place by minivans. :3d_frown:

The cam that's going to be going into my truck is going to be big :B

Problem with longer duration, more of a chance to burn a valve. a 236 does sound fine but what are the specs of the motor CI CFM on carburator and such and such.

Well see, I think maybe I'm reading you wrong Doward, because most people are telling me much bigger, and all these people know i'm not in it for the lumpity lump. And no, I'm not doubting you, I think I'm just stupid.

Its a small block 400, its all stock right now, but when this all goes down it will have an Edelbrock 600-650. I believe the flow rate on a 400 is like 59* CFM so itll suit.

i got a set of heads if your going to do a rebuild.brand new dart sportsmanII 64cc angle plug heads, if it is not got centerbolt valve covers would fit perfect.been setting in my garage for the last 14 years still in the plastic.
