Amp puts out 2 x 200w RMS @ 8 ohms, and 2 x 400w RMS @ 4 ohms. Speakers are rated at 4 - 6 ohms.
The main benefits of a separate system are the choices and options you have as far as getting the sound you ultimately want. You can match the amp you want with any preamp you want. My uncle used to have my amp with a tube preamp attached. It also allows you to match things up the way you want. Like I can get another 4004 amp and maybe another monoblock amp, and run a very nice 5.1 setup with a decent signal processor, etc.
It's about flexibility and superior sound. My system is better than the average system, but a far cry from "nice" systems. Ultimately it's about the size of your wallet and what you want as far as sound goes.

One cool thing i have to share is the new pair of speakers i got REALLY cheap and found out they are actually fairly high quality. not sure how hi yet though because I've only had them one day and there isn't a ton of info online. but apparently they're known for great sound and I've only heard good about them. they are the ADS L520's in the front of the pic. so now i have to pick from one of the three sets of main front speakers. probably not the Bose units though until i can find a new tweeter for one. so yeah here's a pic. bose 401's on the left, technics sb-L50's on the right, ultimate sound st-1212 sub beneath and ADS L520's up front. and just to let you know since i just picked up those speakers in front they haven't even been cleaned yet.. so they look a bit dusty/dirty...heh.

They look like a very simple design, have heard good things about them in regards to sound quality for jazz, etc.

yeah they are basic. but they do seem to have to tonal qualities you'd want for jazz. i haven't gotten them setup yet, and the speaker wire connectors have small holes so i'm not sure what i'm going to do about that...i have monster cable and its a tad bit thick....
i think i might just change the wire. do you know anything about validity of the audio quality claims to expensive wires? because i'd be fine with a thinner wire but there's all this advertising on monster cable and such brands saying that their special methods and wire will make better sound... which i think could be total BS seeing as how most if not all speakers use thin wires inside the cabinet so in effect you'd be placing a bunch of high-end wire behind a little thin one inside the cabinet that just makes all your effort and money pointless...
or does the better wire have more to do with going a long distance without much signal loss...for those who have very large listening areas....

Yes speaker wire can make a difference, but it should be near the end of your list after quality components.
ah ok, cool. well i'll probably just use small wire for now, mainly because i'm not sure how to go about changing the plugs in back, and i'm no good at soldering just yet.
