A co-worker of mine showed me the dyno from his Dodge with a cummins turbo diesel...I know that diesels rock the world, but damn....397 hp and 2027 ft-lbs of tq! I wish I would've snapped a photo for proof...he said that he just had some other shit done to it that brought it up to the 3000 range.....and for those of you that know dodge, he's on his 3rd tranny (with supposedly $15k into his current one)

I'll see if I can get a pic of the dyno from him, it may be another 6 months before I see him again (I work field service, I may have met half of the people in my region, let alone in the entire U.S.)

Tell your co-worker the dyno's busted.

I should go dyno my 05 cummins.....

He'd have to be making 2027ft-lbs of torque by 1028rpm to not go over 397hp. If he even made 1000ft-lbs of torque at 2100rpm, he'd be over 397hp.

His dyno graph would look hilarious, kinda exactly like this...

I'd also like to add that a majority of diesels are pretty shit when it comes to anything other than saving money in fuel costs plus smelling and sounding like shit.

Most americans I've seen talk about diesels seem to think that they are ALL teh shit, well, coming from a guy who lives in a country were diesels are everywhere, it's not true.

you obviously dont have a clue what youre talking about.

the luxury yachting industry alone is a great example of turbo diesels being put to great use, while not only looking good, but sounding good as well.

just cause in your country you see a bunch of busted ass pieces of shit dosnt give you any qualifications to make the statement you did.

i'm bad, i'm nationwide
i remember one company i worked for had like 3 race trucks, a dragster, a salt-flat truck, and a hill climb truck

the drag truck had 2 nose to tail cummins signature 600 angines, allison 5 speed auto, and ran 13 flat...at a weight of 15000lbs, had eight slicks on it, put on one hell of a show doing burnouts

sooo... you can have low HP...and excessively high torque...and that can also make for a fast car?

i'm still figuring out these things...torque and HP and all that.

right now i'm kinda assuming that with hella torque you can be just as fast and a car running lots of HP at a high rpm with a different gear ratio... lower or higher i'm not sure i mix them up...lol

I come from a land down under
When I was a kid we used to race in an isolated industrial estate and one of the local transport companies used to have a depot there.

The Owner instead of getting pissed at us used to bring his SAR KW out and do massive burnouts with it, pretty damn cool and terrifying to watch as it came towards you :D

Horsepower sells cars, Torque moves them. These are the principles that have driven the American car culture since it's infancy. This ideal is what bread the American big block V8's.

I just texted him to send me a copy. I dunno if he will or not. He's going to Milwaukee tomorrow morning-it may take a week or so.

Jeff: That's almost exactly what his dyno looks like.

The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it sounds, but I saw the dyno with my own two eyes. he had several in a booklet, it started with stock (190/400 ish @wheels), intake/5" exhaust, then one with the turbo upgrade (300/1000) and then with everything (397/2027) I know diesels make a crapton more tq than hp, but this just isn't balanced. There must have been a problem with the dyno or something.

Note: I did a dyno back in the day with my 95' mitsu mirage (stock) and it was 85 hp with 250 ft'lb of tq- a little ridiculous too for a 4 cyl gasser-maybe it was the same sort of mis-calibration thing going on when he dynoed-though nevertheless, his truck still has a really big sack on it.

If the rpm isn't being read correctly the torque can show huge spikes. That doesn't mean the actual torque output was the same as one big split second peak on the chart. With 395hp I don't see it making over 1k ft/lbs.

Horsepower sells cars, Torque wins races...

sorta like a joke with me and my friend

"Hey, nice honda"

"yep it has 800 HP, mind helping me push it to that hill so I can get it moving"

(Honda's have very low torque compared to HP imo)

Just watched a show on Jay Leno's garage and he put this huge bus engine in a bus/trailer. It was turboed as well as supercharged; what else would you expect from Jay, ;).

Anyways, Jay's mechanic said it was just over 400hp and something like 1300ft-lbs.

I dont really know much about the whole diesel rig, just thought I'd share what i heard.
