YEAH... its agreed i caught on late and was reading through and was going to say this same thing about friction and surface area...

Like I said, wider tires will pretty much always give you better traction. Just because it isn't a longitudinal contact patch, doesn't mean anything. Well, it just means it's not as "efficient" for forward acceleration. But more surface area is more surface area.

As to what is the best a wider tire with not as soft as a compound, or a skinnier one with a stickier compound. I don’t know. I don’t know where the advantage of surface area vs higher coefficient of friction will cross. I can tell you that a 235 slick will hook better than a 315 regular street tire.

How about this; just put some nice 275+ sticky tires out back and you’ll most likely be good.

No real reason to debate at what point size vs compound will yield better results. Just go big and sticky.

but about the lsd... i think that its cool if ur making under a certain amount of power to go with the 4.3...it will give u a sort of "bang for the buck" but like the guy who posted that he took his out and was running like 1 bar...i think the 4.3 is too steep for cars over SOME certain power mark...or more specifically..too much torque.

what im thinking is....for the same car with the same amount of whp..if u steadily increase the power of both...there will be a point where the 4.3 will be too hard to get traction with without getting some ridiculous tire...

any comments?

Not a fan of the "over a certain power" arguement. The domestic guys running 1/8 miles will have much more hp than ANYONE on this board and have crazy high gear ratios in the 5-6 range, don't have any issues hooking.

So how is it that someone that has 3-400 hp can't hook on 4.30s? Simple, too lazy to buy decent tires. It realy is that simple, just buy decent tires.

It doesn't take that much to hook on 4.3os and some power. Just a decent set of tires. If it takes running DRs on the street, then that's what it takes. Tens of thousands of domestic guys do that every day and it's not even an issue. I don't know why it should be with us.

Too many folks want to go fast without doing it even halfway properly.

If you cant get traction with a 4.3 and 400hp you have crappy tires or they are not wide enough or both. The Nitto 555r was gripping like crazy on the street and I got about 20k miles out of them. A street legal race tire like the Falken rt-215/rt-615 or Kumho Victoracer or Yokohama a032r or similar is a good comprimise between a drag radial and a normal street tire. Spend an extra hundred dollars on tires and you will not have these "traction issues".

I come from a land down under
OoS: Another factor is having to "Drive the Car" instead of just inflicting agony on the tires...

I'm sure if you gave their cars to a good peddler he/she could hook it up no problems and put in respectable times.

well....I am getting used to them. I think if it wasn't 30 degrees out every day, it might have a chance of hooking up, at least in second gear.

Tires are 245 45 R 17 Kumho Ecsta MX

I guess my next tire will be an ET street or a Nitto....

The higher the ratio, the faster the engine revs will be at any given vehicle speed. The higher the ratio the worse the gas mileage will be for freeway driving.
If you do a lot of freeway driving or want top speed go with a 3.7:1
If you drag race or want to get better accelleration then go 4.3:1
If you want something in between then a 3.9:1 is a good choice.

actually, I'm getting better gas mileage with the 4.30s. The engine has better power at 3.5k off boost than it does at 2800 of boost. Apparently, not as much strain on the motor.

The mileage looks better because the spedo is off, not because you are really getting better milage. You are not actually traveling as far as the odometer says you are.

ok, i am planning on going to a u-pull it place in oh, about 2 hours and i have an 87 na 5spd

i have the sport package so im pretty damn sure i have the 4.3:1 LSD, but honestly i dont like the top end on it. at around 3k im doing 60ish. its great when im sliding around in a parking lot or trying to fish through a turn or just taking off like a rocket, but id rather have less acceleration and better top end. i have no plans of racing the car as of now, just taking it out at high speed in the mountains. i found an 89t in a local yard and was gonna pull the rear diff. i know ill loose a bit of acceleration, but will it bog the car down that much? this is damn near a bone stock na, its got an aluminum drive shaft and upgraded air filter. that 89 looks to be in decent shape, should i pull the 3.7 or hope i find a 3.9? as of now im thinking the 3.7 because A.) i found a car with it B.) id like the higher top end, even if it takes a little longer to reach. as long as my supra isnt slugish and can still pull out pretty quickly ill be ok.

im looking at a 1200mile trip on monday or tuesday and im not looking forward to idling around +4k most of the way down there. open highway most of the trip, and then ill be driving back in a week. gas costs are gonna bite me hard.... i do plan on keeping the 4.3 for later on if i feel the need for it, but as my current daily driver id like a bit more efficient car.

also, what is this about changing the spedo drive gear??? im guessing its located in the trans, but where is it, and will an autos be compatible with my 5spd, or where can i get it.
