this totalled vehicle situation has me intrigued and open to new options.

Im graduating in may and officially done in december with classes. Im getting about $2800 which is a damn good downpayment on something used. Maybe a used MKIV with a private loan. Even if i didn't need a downpayment the 2800 would be enough to pay the monthly payments through december until i get a job.

I was planning on getting one out of school anyway. Not sure how to approach this one.

I could just use the money and swap EVERYTHING from my totalled car into a good MKIII but its such a hassle. Not to mention i can sell all my MKIII performance parts for a pretty penny on top of that 2800. Decisions decisions....what to do?!

My opinion...buying a 15 year old toyota for $20k+ is dumb.

im sure you can get them more around 15 or lower, especially with todays market, but i understand what you're saying

Even if you got a good deal on a MkIV, I think the money could be better spent elsewhere.

I'd stick with what I know and love; MkIIIs. Yeah, you'd have to go through the work of swapping again (sounds like your luck is pretty bad!), but you know (or should know) the MkIII inside and out. I say find another shell and stick with it. You might not like the idea now, but if you're hardcore with the MkIII like the rest of us dumb retards, your best bet is to stick with it.

Of course, this would also be a good chance to move on to something new. Use a car with different headaches instead.

my growing concerns are reliability. This is my second chassis now that is no good. I could find a 97 maybe instead of an 87, thats ten years less wear and tear. I was going to get an mkiv eventually anyway out of school so im just debating whether i should stick wiht the mkiii for 11 more months or just bite the bullet and splurge now.

Its a fighting battle with money really. Usually stuff that has new parts for the same price is pretty crappy and unwanted, or just newer and a LOT more expensive. Stuff thats older but more desirable is still older and will need money dumped into it to do basic maintenance.

I just checked your old MkIII..shocked to see the same color, year, interior, trans, etc and even made the same month! Do you have the VIN for it? I'm curious how close it was made to mine :icon_razz

I say go for it if you work the finances out. But like anything else i would spend the extra to get the car I wanted (Turbo 6 speed low mileage) rather then buy a ragged out version.

And to those that say they wont spend 20k on a 10 year old toyota you are an idoit...so if it says lexus that makes it worth it?? Right...

if you want reliability get out of the supra game.

I wouldn't say that, as most every other sports/GT car has it's issues... and usually a LOT worse than a Supra.

Personally, I'd get the MKIII shell, swap everything over and drive it. If you really want a MKIV you'll then be able to sell the MKIII for more and you can also wait and save up enough not to finance and buy it outright...

Not really, especially newer ones. And a lot worse then a 7m mk3?

Like this isnt debated all the time :icon_roll

7Ms break because the owner or previous owner didnt care for it.

I bought my 7M modded and its the only car I've had that hasnt left me stranded; only one I havent had towed.

Treat it right, and it'll love you back. That doesnt mean dont go crazy with it. I've even always ran it at 18 psi on the stock fuel system, and its done nothing but soldier on.

Obviously I dont run it that high anymore (since I didnt know). I sold my boost controller.

Okay i don't want this to turn into a 7m bashing thread, i am just stating that there are a lot of newer GT cars that don't have nearly as many problems as an old mk3.
as far as i am concerned, with the typical condition of these cars after 20 years, there aren't many gt cars that are in the same boat of unreliability, especially newer ones.

No....this ^^^ is what you said. The people that have reliability problems are addressed by SC's quote in my sig ;)
I assume you are one of those.

Yes, and i am saying this on a very common problem with 20+ year old cars. They just aren't as reliable as many newer cars. Am i saying they can't be? no that is not, it is just the point of someone worrying about reliably means he shouldn't have a 20+ year old Supra as a car.
Personally my car is quite reliable but it took a lot of $$$$ to get it there.
