If i had a cnc machine id make an adapter so it would run two cables to the two shift forks. Then there would be two sticks to shift on right of seat. A 1-2 shifter......then to shift to 3rd....put 1-2 in Neutral and shift the 3-R to 3rd gear....i make sense?

makes sence. its just that i dont exactly know how i'd attach such a mechanism to the forks and i dont remember what they look like. from memory all i remember is a small little thing that the shift lever was held in with (three bolts, round thing) and a small hole for the shifter to stick inside. no room for a contraption...just the stick! lol....but i'm not sure. its been a while....

i'm thinking...the long stick idea...miiiight just work. but its a stretch.

for one, it would be a HUGE throw. two...the way i imagine my tranny placement the stick would be RIGHT behind my back/seat. i'm sure there is a way to extend the stock shift pattern forward but it would be difficult... i'll think about it once i have the tranny pulled so i can visualize the angles needed... i'm good with this stuff but i'm not going to waste my time on a vague memory :nono:

the best/biggest mod to do on those is shave the head down and make a head gasket out of some thin material. Ive even made headgaskets out of aluminum tape with gasket sealer, and yes theywork! They dont last all that long, but aside from cam/header/carb/porting, thats about the only thing that will get you noticeable power. The cams and spark timing are so far down in these motors port work or carbs wont do a dam thing. Im not sure how those bigger motors are, but some other effective port work is taking out the big bumps/burr marks on the upper part of the intake and exhaust. But dont cut into the space for the head bolt! But if you take the carb off, you should see what i mean. A well built 5hp can easily make 10-12hp at 5000 rpms or more, if you can still find a clemens cam or some other aftermarket cam around. You also need a carb, and offset timing keys or an adjustable timing coil mount to advance it a little. And the motor should crank. There is something i figured out with the stock cam now come to think of it, you can advance it some by taking it out and putting it back in, but i think you had to grind down the lifters so it wouldnt open as early or the enging wouldnt run. Id have to look at one of my old motors to see. But i do remember that getting me some noticeable seat of the pants power too.

You guys are going about this shifter problem all wrong.
Paddle shifters... thats where its at. Get a pair of small quick electronic actuators and hook those up to the shift forks. Hook paddle switches up accordingly. WEE rally car!

that sounds expensive.

so far my budget cap is 80 bux. that will change with a frame...but hell.

today i'm removing the tranny and possibly dissasembling or at least the pulley to check out getting a smaller one.

see my pics for what i have to work with, shift servos sound reallly expensive and kinda complicated...

hahahahaha.

cool. thanks man.

today I;

removed the tranny, found a good 2" pulley and installed that and tore apart our red mower for scrap. so once i can find a belt or jimmy rig the old belt and setup to work by moving the axle forward, i'll give everything a try and start plans for a chassis for my future gokart! yay!

i am a bit worried though when i roll the rear axle around with it in gear i can hear the gears...is that bad?

k guys! i had some pretty awesome fun with my newly geared lawn tractor yesterday!! it was nuts!! i had to use the lower pulley meant for the mower blade belt because i didnt have the correct shorter belt to accomodate the normal drive pulley, so basically i didnt dare putting it in 3rd gear... for one it bogged down and two, it was fast enough in 2nd gear to be a bit scared about the integrity of the old parts and my ability to steer it with the aged steering system and multiple turn lock-to-lock steering. it was fun though!!

i'm going to start thinking about a chassis now. but yeah does anybody know if the rear gear noise is normal? i'm guessing these trannys arent super quiet but it does make me worry a little bit.

also, what do you guys think about keeping the front-engine layout for a gokart? just lowering everything a bit, widening it, and making it a gokart...(all new chassis)

about rear end......most tractor rear ends make gear noise...

and idea about go-kart layout.....i basically did this with a modded tractor and it works for most part. I plan on making a frame and making a true go-trac soon. Thats if i dont sell everything now......anyone interested in motors, rear ends, whole tractors lol?

i felt the same way as i ripped down my driveway on my newfound danger mobile.

i'm not a wimp but IMO it's fuckin scary to get up to a decent speed on these things... when not lowered. in 2nd gear and not even WOT it's already a bit faster than my 3.5hp gokart... (duh)

but yeah, this looks promising. i'm thinking the smaller pulley and 3rd gear should allow decent speed and gobs of power in the low end.

another question; what can we do for less diff unloading. i was attempting to do something close to a donut but it pretty much unloaded on the inside...

awesome work clip!

the only problem with your shift linkage suggestion is the fact my tranny is NOT a 5speed and its shift setup is very similar to how you work a 5 speed on a 1:1 car or truck, its an H-pattern. thus i have this stick that i have to fling every which way and with your layout it would poke right through your engine block :-/

so i must devise another way to do it. i'm thinking a 2-seater though and depending on the layout i might just have the shifter stick between both passengers...

ok guys! update! I found a new engine! well, its used, but looks to be in great condition because the case has no surface rust, and the owner said he kept up with the oil changes and maintenance on the engine but the rust got to the mowing deck and its shot so 3 years ago it went into storage and now he took off the tarp and its got some rust down low but its fine where it counts!

so i've upgraded to a hopefully perfectly running, non-smoking (lol) engine with 1.5 more hp! and a cast iron sleeve if that helps at all...

now i just have to get it home. :D
but the difficutly doing this with my small truck (with a shell :icon_mad: ) is worth it, for the mower is FREE!! (not including scrap fees, but those are minimal)

here are some pics. basically everything but the wheels, tranny, belts, engine, electronics, and the seat will be scrapped. same procedure i did to my last dead mower that dared to throw its rod... :evil2: and to let you know i wont be using the 7 speed tranny except for possibly fun to see how long it takes to blow it up, as toyotah8tr says they, like the 5speeds, are not designed with the same integrity as the 3 speed i already have.

if only i had two identical engines, i'd do a dual setup...or try it at least. :biglaugh:

maybe someday i'll make a dual-engine 4wd....

sorry sorry...pics!
