I should wait until I get definite pricing, but I'm so excited I have to share. I've got a supplier of aftermarket cams interested in making ones for the 7m. They would need an order of 100 cams in order to justify making the blanks (which I'm presuming will be cast). Any spec lobe (lift/duration) you want can then be custom cut from them. Now 100 cams sounds like a lot, but we would use the same core for intake an exhaust so that's *only* 50 sets -- cutting the distributor/CPS drive gear into the exhaust cam, and grindining it completely off the intake cam. And HPF is willing to stock a fair amount of these, so I basically need to see how much interest there actually is.

Pricing? ~$500-$600 shipped per set (TODA's are more than $700 EACH!). Because of the group buy price, these will be less expensive than the HKS cams for the 2JZ and 1JZ... After the group-buy, they will be comparable (~$800/set -- unless we can get another large buy at once).

A disclaimer: Large lift and duration cams will also require valve springs and shim-under buckets, so don't expect to order the biggest bumpsticks and slap them in a stock head. I will be putting together a "stage 1" cam set which will be able to use the stock valvetrain (likely to be very similar to the HKS 264). It will still be a good upgrade from even NA cams

i'll be ready well before spring, but sometime after the holidays.
either way, i'm in.
any idea on proposed specifications? a mild upgrade or will we need shim under buckets, because, that's fine with me. just gives me more reason to get them.

anyhow, definetely keep us posted, because i will be in on the initial run. :wiggle:

and if we need cores, just let me know. i got two extra sets ready to go

That's entirely up to you. The hardest part is getting 100 blank cams made. Grinding/polishing the cams to individual spec is very easy. To get some idea of what other cams have been, check out: http://www4.tpgi.com.au/users/loats/technical/7mge/camshafts.html

HPF will probably make it easy and have 3 suggested stages, but if you want staggered cams with your own lift -- thats no problem

Nice work Jeff! It is about time somebody stepped up to the plate on cams, is it Crower? Currently I have what I need but any future projects would definitely need a set, I'll take a set on speculation at that price.

Whoa now...

Jeff, you totaly lost me about grinding off the CPS gear on the exhaust cam....

if that is what you are saying,.......I am just confused...how is that going to work?

ICBW, but what think he is saying is that both the intake & exhaust cams will be cut from cams that have the CPS gear (exhaust cam), but the intake cam will have the gear removed. This will allow them to make only one blank cam.

The hard part is getting the blanks. In order to reach the 100 order minimum, we'll have to create both cams from a common blank. To get an idea of what I mean by a blank check out this picture:

Those aren't for a 7m, but you get the idea... The top 2 cams have been cut into their final form, while the bottom cams are the blanks which can be cut to any specification.

Now notice on the left side of this picture, the exhaust cam has a built-in gear while the intake cam does not. That gear is what drives your distributor (if NA) or Cam Position Sensor (if turbo). In order to reach the minimum, we'll have to make a single blank with room to cut that gear out. For the intake, it will just be completely removed so you wouldn't even know it was there.

My project list includes cams with appropriate duration and ~11mm lift - head is already clearanced to accommodate the large arc of rotation :). Would be great if I can get them relatively soon.
